Mali’s military authorities have announced the opening of a full investigation into the coordinated terrorist attacks that occurred on April 25 across multiple locations in the country, describing the incident as one of the most serious security breaches in recent years due to its scale, coordination, and the high-profile nature of the targets involved.
According to the military statement, the attacks struck several strategic positions belonging to the Malian armed forces, including installations in the capital city Bamako and the nearby town of Kati. The operation also extended to sensitive government-linked locations, including the private residence of Defence and Veterans Affairs Minister Sadio Camara, raising concerns about the level of intelligence and coordination used by the attackers.
The military prosecutor stated that preliminary investigations have uncovered what he described as “solid evidence” suggesting the involvement of individuals within the security establishment itself. These include serving soldiers, dismissed personnel, and others who were reportedly in the process of being discharged from military service. Officials further confirmed that initial arrests have already been carried out as part of the investigation. In addition to alleged military involvement, the prosecutor’s statement also pointed to the possible participation of political figures. Among those named is Dr. Oumar Mariko, a well-known political figure in Mali. Authorities have not yet detailed the exact nature of his alleged involvement, but his inclusion signals that the investigation may extend beyond the military sphere into political networks. Mariko has not been convicted of any wrongdoing in connection with the case.
The April 25 attacks involved simultaneous strikes on multiple military and government targets, suggesting a high level of coordination and planning. Security analysts note that the ability to strike both military installations and the residence of a senior government minister indicates significant operational capacity and intelligence gathering by the attackers.
Mali has been struggling with deep and prolonged insecurity since 2012, when a Tuareg rebellion in the north escalated into a broader insurgency involving jihadist groups. Over the years, the conflict has spread across large parts of the country, destabilizing governance and contributing to repeated military interventions and coups.
