Mali’s army reportedly carried out overnight strikes on the northern town of Kidal, targeting areas held by Tuareg rebels and JNIM allies since renewed fighting in April. Residents reported explosions and damage to buildings, including the governor’s compound. The military said the operations are targeted and may intensify, while Kidal remained unusually quiet the following morning amid rising tensions in the region.

Mali’s army reportedly carried out a series of overnight strikes between Wednesday and Thursday targeting the town of Kidal in the country’s remote northern desert region, according to residents and local sources cited by AFP.
The strikes come amid renewed tensions in northern Mali, where Kidal has been under the control of Tuareg rebel groups and their allies from the JNIM jihadist network since a coordinated wave of attacks across the region in late April. That offensive was reportedly enabled by an unusual alignment between armed groups, allowing them to quickly seize several strategic military bases and expand their influence across key areas of the north.
Residents in Kidal said they were jolted by at least four loud explosions during the night, describing scenes of panic and confusion as the blasts echoed across the town. The strikes reportedly caused significant material damage, with one explosion destroying a house located near a former market area, while another impacted the governor’s compound. The extent of the damage has raised concern among local inhabitants, many of whom have been living under shifting control and repeated insecurity in recent years.
A Malian army officer confirmed that the armed forces are conducting targeted operations aimed at specific objectives in the area. He added that military action is expected to intensify in the coming days, suggesting a sustained campaign to weaken armed groups and reassert state control over the strategically important northern territory.
By Thursday morning, witnesses described an unusually quiet atmosphere in Kidal, with roads largely empty and very little movement as residents remained indoors following the overnight bombardment. The calm, however, was seen as tense and uneasy, reflecting fears of further escalation in the conflict.
Kidal has long held significant strategic and symbolic importance in Mali’s northern conflict. For more than a decade, it functioned as an unofficial stronghold for the Tuareg Azawad Liberation Front coalition and other separatist movements, becoming a central hub of resistance against state authority. The town was eventually recaptured by Mali’s army in late 2023 with the assistance of Russian mercenaries, marking a major shift in territorial control.
However, despite that recapture, instability has persisted in the region, with armed groups continuing to contest state authority and launch attacks. The latest strikes underscore the fragile security situation in northern Mali and highlight the ongoing struggle between government forces, separatist factions, and jihadist networks competing for control of key towns and supply routes in the Sahel region.
