Malawi has switched on a 20-megawatt battery storage facility to improve electricity reliability and reduce blackouts. Malawi has completed the installation of a 20-megawatt utility-scale battery storage system, a major step towards improving the country's unreliable electricity supply and making its power network more resilient to climate-related shocks.
The facility, which was switched on by the Electricity Supply Corporation of Malawi (ESCOM) over the weekend, is expected to help stabilise the national grid and reduce the frequency and duration of power blackouts.
The project comes as Malawi faces growing pressure on its electricity system, with climate change and extreme weather events threatening the country's heavy dependence on hydropower.

A BOOST FOR MALAWI'S FRAGILE POWER SYSTEM

Malawi relies heavily on hydropower for electricity generation, with hydroelectric plants accounting for about two-thirds of the country's power supply.
However, the system is vulnerable to changes in rainfall and water levels.
The strong El Niño weather pattern is expected to bring higher temperatures and reduce water flows in the Shire River, a major source of hydropower for the country.
Malawi has also experienced the damaging effects of extreme weather in recent years. Hydropower infrastructure was severely affected by Cyclone Freddy three years ago, highlighting the risks facing the country's energy system.
The new battery facility is designed to provide additional flexibility to the electricity network, helping to balance supply and demand when power generation fluctuates.

MORE BATTERY PROJECTS PLANNED

The government says the new facility is only the beginning of a broader effort to strengthen Malawi's electricity infrastructure.
Authorities plan to develop three additional battery storage facilities in two other cities, with a combined capacity of 60 megawatts.
The expansion is expected to increase the country's ability to manage fluctuations in electricity generation and reduce its dependence on a single source of power.
Solar energy currently contributes about 100 megawatts to Malawi's total installed generation capacity of roughly 580 megawatts.
The government is seeking to increase the role of renewable energy while improving the reliability of the national grid.

ONLY A QUARTER OF MALAWIANS HAVE ELECTRICITY ACCESS

Despite efforts to improve the power sector, electricity access remains a major challenge in Malawi.
Only about a quarter of the country's population currently has access to electricity.
The government has set an ambitious target of increasing access to 70% by 2030.
Energy Minister Jean Mathanga said reliable electricity was essential not only for economic development but also for the country's hospitals, schools and businesses.
The new battery project, he said, was about ensuring that critical services have access to stable and high-quality electricity.

600,000 MORE HOUSEHOLDS EXPECTED TO BENEFIT

ESCOM said the battery storage system could help support the connection of about 600,000 additional households to the national grid.
The project is also expected to reduce power outages from an average of around four hours to less than two hours.
The facility was funded by the Global Energy Alliance for People and Planet, an initiative focused on expanding clean and reliable energy access.
If successful, the project could provide an important model for other African countries facing similar challenges with unreliable electricity supplies and climate-related disruptions.

BLACKOUTS ARE HURTING SMALL BUSINESSES

For many Malawians, the country's electricity crisis is not simply an infrastructure problem. It directly affects their livelihoods.
Adrian Masoambeta, a 43-year-old welding business owner, said frequent power cuts had made it difficult for him to operate his business and support his family.
He said the unreliable electricity supply had made it increasingly difficult to pay his children's college fees.
Masoambeta said he hoped the new battery storage facilities would bring some relief to businesses like his.
His experience reflects the wider impact of unreliable electricity on small businesses, which often lose working hours, customers and income whenever power supplies are interrupted.

Malawi's new battery storage system represents an important shift in how the country is approaching its energy challenges.
