The tragedy occurred when a tanker carrying a full load of fuel overturned on a damaged portion of the Katcha-Agae road in Niger State, spilling its highly flammable contents across the roadway.

Eyewitnesses recounted that local residents rushed to the scene to collect the leaking fuel, unaware of the imminent danger. Moments later, the tanker ignited in a massive explosion, leaving a scene of chaos and devastation. The force of the blast caused injuries to numerous individuals, with many suffering burns and other serious wounds. Those affected were transported to nearby medical facilities, including the Badegi Clinic and the Ezza Dispensary Hospital, where they are currently receiving treatment.

Farouk Mohammed Kawo, the Niger State Chairperson of the Petroleum Tanker Drivers (PTD), told reporters that most of the casualties were among the residents who had gathered to scoop petrol from the overturned tanker before the explosion occurred. He emphasized the tragic consequences of the incident, highlighting the dangers of approaching fuel spillages without proper safety measures.

Hajiya Aishatu Sa’adu, sector commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in Niger State, confirmed that officials are still conducting rescue operations at the scene. She added that the accident has caused severe traffic congestion along the busy Katcha-Agae expressway, further complicating emergency response efforts. Authorities have urged motorists and residents to exercise caution while traveling in the area and to avoid approaching accident sites, particularly those involving fuel-laden vehicles.

The incident has drawn widespread attention and concern, raising questions about road safety and the condition of highways in Niger State. Local officials are reportedly assessing the scene to prevent further accidents and are calling for stricter regulations on fuel transportation to avoid similar tragedies in the future.
