He further emphasized that the federal government would step up efforts to dismantle and neutralize armed groups across the country, particularly in regions that have been persistently affected by insurgency. In his message, President Tinubu commended the Nigerian military for their swift and courageous response to the coordinated assaults on military positions in Maiduguri, the capital of Borno State, acknowledging their dedication and professionalism in defending the city from further attacks.
To strengthen security measures, the president revealed that additional military equipment and operational support had been approved, aimed at ensuring a more robust and effective response. He also instructed top security officials to relocate to Maiduguri to oversee and coordinate security operations on the ground. In addition, emergency response agencies have been mobilized to provide immediate assistance to the victims, including medical care, relief supplies, and support for families affected by the violence.
The attacks occurred on Monday evening and targeted multiple busy locations, including a local market, areas surrounding a post office, and the entrance to a teaching hospital, according to official sources. These areas were selected by the attackers likely to maximize casualties and create widespread panic among residents. The Nigerian military issued a warning indicating that suspected militants linked to Boko Haram may have deployed multiple suicide bombers into the city, advising citizens to avoid crowded places, exercise caution, and remain vigilant.
Authorities reported that the coordinated attacks resulted in the deaths of at least 23 individuals, while more than 100 others sustained injuries of varying degrees.
