Atiku Raises Alarm Over Suspected Bank Account Breach After Unauthorised Campaign Donation

Former Nigerian Vice President Atiku Abubakar has alleged that his confidential banking information may have been compromised after an unknown individual transferred money into one of his private bank accounts with the narration "Contribution Electioneering Campaign."
Atiku, the presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), disclosed the development in a statement issued on Friday by his Senior Special Assistant on Public Communication, Phrank Shaibu.
According to the statement, neither Atiku nor his campaign requested, authorised or had any prior knowledge of the payment.

PRIVATE ACCOUNT DETAILS RAISE QUESTIONS

The former vice president described the transaction as deeply troubling because the affected account is strictly private and its details are not publicly available.
"The account is a strictly private one whose details are not in the public domain. This raises a fundamental question: How did unknown persons obtain the confidential banking details of a private citizen?" the statement said.
Atiku warned that if the confidential banking details of a former vice president and presidential candidate could be accessed without authorisation, then the financial privacy of ordinary Nigerians could also be at risk.

FEARS OF ABUSE OF PRIVILEGED ACCESS

The statement suggested that individuals with privileged access to sensitive financial information may have obtained the account details.
"If established, this would amount to a grave abuse of power capable of exposing the account holder to kidnappers, terrorists, bandits, fraudsters and other criminal elements," the statement added.
Atiku said the matter had been reported to relevant security agencies and urged a thorough investigation.

WARNING AS 2027 ELECTIONS APPROACH

The ADC presidential candidate linked the incident to what he described as a pattern of suspicious activities emerging ahead of Nigeria's 2027 general elections.
He urged Nigerians not to be distracted by what he characterised as attempts to damage his reputation as political campaigns gather momentum.
"Such desperate antics have failed before and will fail again," the statement said.
Atiku maintained that he remains committed to offering Nigerians credible leadership and practical solutions to the country's economic and security challenges.

The allegation comes amid rising political tensions ahead of the 2027 elections, with several recent developments fuelling public debate over the conduct of public institutions during the pre-election period.
Only days earlier, President Bola Tinubu directed the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to lift a court-backed restriction placed on the Osun State Government's bank account after concerns were raised that the timing of the action could create the perception of political interference ahead of the state's governorship election.
Although the Osun account freeze and Atiku's banking complaint involve separate issues, both incidents have intensified discussions about transparency, due process and the protection of public confidence as Nigeria moves closer to another nationwide election.
Analysts say safeguarding financial privacy, ensuring institutional neutrality and maintaining public trust are likely to remain key issues throughout the 2027 electoral cycle.
