Anthony Joshua Crash Trial Adjourned To November 17

The trial of Adeniyi Mobolaji Kayode, the driver accused in the December 2025 crash involving boxer Anthony Joshua, has been adjourned to November 17. Kayode faces charges including dangerous driving causing death, reckless and negligent driving, and driving without a valid licence. Prosecutors allege he was overtaking another vehicle when the SUV carrying Joshua and his team crashed into a stationary truck, killing Joshua’s trainer, Latif Ayodele, and coach, Sina Ghami. Joshua survived the crash with injuries.

TRIAL ADJOURNED OVER FATAL CRASH

The trial of Adeniyi Mobolaji Kayode, the driver accused in the December 2025 crash involving British-Nigerian boxer Anthony Joshua, has been adjourned to November 17.
The case, which began in January at a Magistrate Court in Ogun State, was scheduled to continue on Thursday but was moved to a later date.
Kayode, 46, is facing several charges arising from the crash on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, which killed two members of Joshua's team and left the former world heavyweight champion injured.

DRIVER FACES MULTIPLE CHARGES

Kayode faces charges including dangerous driving causing death, reckless and negligent driving, driving without due care and attention, and operating a vehicle without a valid national driver's licence.
The charges relate to the circumstances surrounding the crash and the alleged manner in which the vehicle was being driven.
Kayode is entitled to the presumption of innocence unless and until he is found guilty by the court.

PROSECUTION ALLEGES DANGEROUS OVERTAKING

Prosecutors allege that Kayode was attempting to overtake another vehicle when the SUV carrying Joshua and members of his team crashed into a stationary truck.
The circumstances surrounding the overtaking manoeuvre and the position of the vehicles at the time of the collision remain important parts of the court proceedings.
Earlier testimony before the court has focused on what happened immediately before the crash and whether the driving met the required standard of care.

TWO MEMBERS OF JOSHUA'S TEAM DIED

The December 29, 2025 crash claimed the lives of Latif Ayodele, Joshua's personal trainer, and Sina Ghami, his strength and conditioning coach.
Both men were members of Joshua's close professional team and were travelling with the boxer at the time of the accident.
Their deaths prompted widespread tributes from the boxing community and fans in Nigeria, Britain and beyond.

JOSHUA SURVIVED THE CRASH

Joshua, a two-time former world heavyweight champion, survived the accident but suffered injuries.
He was subsequently treated and discharged from hospital.
The boxer had been travelling with members of his team to visit his father in Ogun State when the crash occurred.
The accident brought renewed attention to the dangers posed by heavy traffic, roadside obstructions and dangerous driving on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.

POLICE RAISED QUESTIONS ABOUT CRASH SCENE

Earlier proceedings also heard evidence from police investigators about the condition of the crash scene.
Police told the court that both vehicles involved had been removed before investigators arrived.
The removal of vehicles from an accident scene can complicate forensic reconstruction because investigators may have difficulty determining their exact positions at the time of impact.

LAGOS-IBADAN EXPRESSWAY

The crash occurred on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, one of Nigeria's busiest major highways.
The road carries large volumes of commercial and private traffic every day and has experienced numerous serious accidents over the years.
The combination of heavy traffic, high speeds, roadside breakdowns and stationary vehicles can create significant risks for motorists, particularly when drivers attempt overtaking manoeuvres.
