Unai Emery has challenged Aston Villa to continue raising standards after guiding the club to a historic Europa League triumph in Istanbul.

Villa produced a dominant display to defeat SC Freiburg and secure their first major trophy in 30 years, while also handing Emery a fifth Europa League title as a manager.

The emphatic victory represented another major milestone in Villa’s remarkable transformation under the Spaniard, who has revitalised the club since arriving in 2022.

Speaking after the final whistle, Emery described the triumph as confirmation that the club’s long-term project is moving firmly in the right direction.

“This final is the confirmation for how we are progressing,” Emery told TNT Sports.

“To win this title makes sense of everything we are doing.”

Emery Demands Continued Improvement

Despite the celebrations, Emery insisted Villa cannot afford to become complacent and challenged both players and staff to continue striving for greater success.

“We are getting stronger, developing everything,” he explained.

“The club is working to extend the stadium, 10,000 people more. They are improving the training centre, and we are trying to be demanding inside. Next year we will play in the Champions League.”

The Villa manager stressed that maintaining high standards will be essential if the club are to establish themselves consistently among Europe’s elite.

“It is very important we must be so, so demanding in our process and our project,” Emery added.

“It can only make sense if we are winning, if we are getting objectives.”

Villa’s Ambitious Future Taking Shape

Under Emery’s leadership, Villa have enjoyed a stunning resurgence, progressing from relegation concerns to European champions and Champions League qualifiers within a short period.

The former Arsenal and Paris Saint-Germain manager praised the collective unity behind Villa’s rise, highlighting the importance of support from ownership, staff and players.

“I need support. The owners, the players, we are doing it together,” he said.

“We must try to set these ambitions, being clear and realistic. Every step forward we are doing makes sense.”

Emery Reflects on European Success

The triumph further cemented Emery’s reputation as one of the most successful managers in European competition history.

Having previously won the Europa League with Sevilla and Villarreal, the Spaniard credited his players and supporters for helping him maintain such extraordinary success on the continental stage.

“Europe gave us a lot, for myself as well, a lot,” Emery said.

“I am always very grateful for Europe, for every competition, especially the Europa League.”

He also praised the commitment and belief shown by his Villa squad throughout the campaign.

“The players showed faith in me. They wished it. They did it.”

Villa’s Europa League success now marks the beginning of an exciting new chapter for the club as preparations begin for a return to the UEFA Champions League next season.
