Tomáš Čvančara has been told he must improve to reclaim his place in the starting line-up at Celtic, with interim manager Martin O'Neill insisting competition for places remains intense within the squad.

The forward was notably absent from Celtic’s emphatic 6-2 victory over St Mirren on Sunday, with O’Neill confirming prior to kick-off that his omission was not injury-related.

In his absence, Daizen Maeda led the line, while Junior Adamu and Kelechi Iheanacho were named among the substitutes.

Competition for Places Intensifies

Čvančara, who joined on loan from Borussia Mönchengladbach, had previously featured regularly but has struggled to make a significant impact, registering two goals and two assists in 13 appearances.

O’Neill made it clear that selection will be based strictly on performance and effort, with no guarantees for any player.

“We made some adjustments ahead of the semi-final,” O’Neill explained.
“It was not extensive rotation, but Junior has been training exceptionally well.

Ultimately, players must compete for their place in the team.”

Uncertainty Over Schmeichel’s Fitness

O’Neill also addressed the situation surrounding Kasper Schmeichel, who remains sidelined through injury.

While the experienced goalkeeper is still under contract, the manager provided no indication regarding his long-term future, with medical assessments ongoing.

“He remains contracted to the club,” O’Neill said.
“There are medical decisions to be made regarding whether he requires an operation. I expect to have more clarity by the middle of the week.

I have been in contact with the medical team, who informed me he was due to see a specialist. He may have already done so, but we are awaiting confirmation on whether surgery will be necessary.”

Selection Decisions Under Scrutiny

With key fixtures approaching, O’Neill’s remarks underline a broader message within the squad — places must be earned, and consistent performance will be crucial as Celtic continue their campaign.

Čvančara now faces the challenge of responding positively if he is to force his way back into contention in the weeks ahead.
