Roma strengthened their push for a Champions League place with a commanding 3–1 home victory over Genoa on Monday, settling the contest with a devastating first-half display.
Roma’s Ruthless First Half Secures 3–1 Genoa Win and Serie A Top-Four Spot
The hosts were in complete control from the outset and needed just 13 minutes to break the deadlock, with Matías Soulé showing composure in front of goal to open the scoring. Genoa barely had time to regroup before Roma struck again, as Manu Koné took advantage of a loose situation to double the lead during a relentless spell of pressure.
Roma’s dominance was underlined shortly after the half-hour mark when Evan Ferguson, on loan from Brighton, reacted sharply to a rebound to make it 3–0, effectively ending the contest before the interval.
Genoa’s evening improved only marginally in the closing stages, when Jeff Ekhator found the net with a deflected effort that offered little consolation for the visitors.
The result was a timely boost for Roma, who had been in danger of losing momentum after managing just one victory in their previous four league outings.
Gian Piero Gasperini’s side now sit fourth in Serie A on 33 points, trailing Napoli by one point, AC Milan by two and leaders Inter Milan by three, with all three clubs still holding a game in hand.
For Genoa, the defeat leaves them 17th in the table, only two points clear of the relegation zone after a third successive loss.
