Spanish Giants Preparing for Crucial Decision as Arbeloa’s Future Remains Unclear
Real Madrid Rule Out Mourinho Return Amid Summer Managerial Uncertainty
Real Madrid CF have reportedly dismissed speculation linking José Mourinho with a sensational return to the Santiago Bernabéu, as the club prepare for a potentially pivotal managerial decision this summer.
Uncertainty surrounds the future of current head coach Álvaro Arbeloa, whose contract runs until the end of the season. Although his record — particularly in La Liga — has been respectable, there are internal doubts as to whether he has meaningfully elevated the team’s overall performance since succeeding Xabi Alonso in January.
As a result, Madrid’s hierarchy are understood to be evaluating their options ahead of the 2026–27 campaign, with a fresh managerial era increasingly likely.
Mourinho Speculation Dismissed
In recent weeks, rumours had intensified regarding a possible return for Mourinho, whose S.L. Benfica side are set to face Real Madrid in the second leg of their UEFA Champions League play-off tie on Wednesday.
However, Mourinho publicly rejected the reports, and Spanish outlet Diario AS has since stated that the club have never considered reappointing the Portuguese tactician. According to the report, Madrid’s board do not view him as the appropriate figure to lead the next phase of the club’s evolution, particularly in light of his recent managerial record.
Mourinho previously managed Real Madrid between 2010 and 2013, delivering domestic silverware but departing amid internal tensions and dressing-room divisions. A romantic return, therefore, appears firmly off the agenda.
Klopp Remains Leading Candidate
Former Liverpool F.C. manager Jürgen Klopp continues to be viewed as the club’s preferred option should they opt for change. However, Klopp has given no clear indication that he intends to return to frontline coaching in the near future.
Other elite names could emerge depending on availability following the 2026 World Cup. Thomas Tuchel and Julian Nagelsmann are among those who may become attainable, although neither is currently understood to be the subject of formal internal discussions.
A Defining Summer Ahead
Beyond the managerial question, Real Madrid face a defining summer in terms of squad restructuring. Several first-team futures must be resolved, and strategic clarity will be essential if the club are to embark on a coherent new project.
The intention had been for Alonso to oversee a long-term transition beginning this season. His unexpected mid-campaign departure has disrupted those plans, increasing the likelihood that a comprehensive reset will commence from the start of the 2026–27 season.
For now, Madrid’s leadership remain patient — but the coming months could shape the club’s trajectory for years to come.
