Portugal and their iconic captain Cristiano Ronaldo were left disappointed after the Democratic Republic of Congo battled back to secure a deserved 1–1 draw in their opening Group K fixture of the FIFA World Cup on Wednesday.

The result marked a memorable return to the global stage for DR Congo, who were making their first World Cup appearance in 52 years and produced a disciplined performance to frustrate one of the tournament favourites.

Portugal made the perfect start and looked set for a comfortable afternoon when they broke the deadlock inside six minutes. Pedro Neto delivered a precise cross into the area and João Neves rose highest to guide a header home from around 15 metres.

The early breakthrough appeared to signal the beginning of Portuguese dominance, but remarkably it proved to be their only shot on target throughout the contest.

With 41-year-old Ronaldo leading the line and seeking to become the first player to score at six different World Cups, Portugal controlled possession for long spells. However, DR Congo remained organised, sat deep defensively and patiently waited for opportunities to counterattack.

As the match progressed, the African side gradually grew in confidence and began to threaten.

Their persistence was rewarded deep into first-half stoppage time when Yoane Wissa etched his name into history by scoring DR Congo’s first-ever FIFA World Cup goal. The forward found himself unmarked inside the penalty area and headed home from Arthur Masuaku’s dangerous delivery.

The equaliser transformed the mood of the contest and exposed Portugal’s inability to convert their dominance into meaningful opportunities.

Portugal returned for the second half with greater urgency after an opening period that lacked intensity and at times resembled a controlled training exercise, with plenty of possession but limited attacking penetration.

DR Congo nearly completed a stunning upset when Cedric Bakambu struck the post midway through the second half, while Ronaldo endured a frustrating evening and missed two close-range opportunities.

Appearing at a sixth World Cup — a record he shares with Lionel Messi — Ronaldo became the oldest player ever to start a World Cup match. Despite the historic milestone, the Portuguese star found little room to operate as DR Congo’s disciplined defensive structure successfully limited his influence.

The result leaves Group K finely balanced ahead of the remaining fixtures, with debutants Uzbekistan set to face Colombia later in Mexico City.

For Portugal, improvement will be required if they are to justify their status as one of the leading contenders, while DR Congo will take enormous belief from a performance that delivered both a valuable point and a historic moment for their nation.
