Joe Rothwell suffered a disastrous start to his Sheffield United career after being sent off just 35 minutes into his debut, capping a miserable evening for the midfielder and his new club.

The 31-year-old brought an underwhelming six-month spell at Rangers to an end by sealing a late move to Bramall Lane, hoping to revive his career with the Blades. However, his fresh start unravelled dramatically on Monday night.

Rothwell, formerly of Bournemouth and Leeds United, was introduced at half-time with Sheffield United already trailing 2–0 against Championship leaders Middlesbrough, replacing Oli Arblaster in midfield.

His impact proved disastrous. Just over half an hour later, Rothwell was dismissed following a reckless, high-speed challenge on Middlesbrough playmaker Alan Browne, who was left on the ground in visible discomfort. The referee had little hesitation in producing a straight red card.

Reaction to the challenge was swift and scathing. Former Middlesbrough favourite Neil Maddison condemned the tackle while speaking on BBC Tees.

“Spot on. Disgraceful challenge — a red card all day long,” Maddison said.

Ex-Sheffield United striker Carl Asaba echoed those sentiments on BBC Radio Sheffield, adding: “It’s a really horrible challenge. Even Chris Wilder is grimacing.”

BBC reporter Adam Lanigan highlighted the visible frustration of Sheffield United manager Chris Wilder on the touchline, suggesting the reaction spoke volumes.

“A manager’s response to a red card is often telling,” Lanigan said. “Chris Wilder was standing with his arms folded. That’s a pretty good indicator that Joe Rothwell’s challenge was certainly a red card. Has that moment of madness ended his team’s chances?”

Despite Patrick Bamford pulling a goal back for the hosts, Middlesbrough capitalised on their numerical advantage to see out the match and secure a vital three points at Bramall Lane.

The defeat leaves relegation-threatened Sheffield United facing an increasingly difficult task as they attempt to climb away from danger in the Championship.
