Pep Guardiola has admitted he is increasingly impressed by Chelsea’s development this season, as Manchester City continue their pursuit of Premier League leaders Arsenal.

City survived a late scare to win 5–4 at Fulham on Tuesday night, cutting the gap to Arsenal to two points. Guardiola’s men looked to be cruising after storming into a 5–1 lead by the 54th minute, but a defensive lapse allowed Fulham to score three times in just over 20 minutes, setting up a nervy finale at Craven Cottage.
Arsenal can re-establish a five-point cushion on Wednesday when they host Brentford, while Chelsea could move back to within a point of City if they defeat Leeds United at Elland Road later that evening.
Enzo Maresca’s side earned plaudits for holding Arsenal to a 1–1 draw at Stamford Bridge on Sunday, despite playing more than half the match with 10 men following Moisés Caicedo’s first-half dismissal.
Guardiola stressed that catching Arsenal will be a formidable challenge, but also believes Chelsea have become genuine contenders under Maresca.
“Arsenal are incredibly strong and extremely solid,” Guardiola said following the dramatic win over Fulham.
“I know exactly what is required from us. If we drop points, the situation becomes very difficult. We must maintain the mindset that the Premier League season is long, but at the same time we cannot afford mistakes.
“I promise you, I’m the oldest manager in the Premier League and I’ve enough experience to understand what it takes to go on a long run to compete for the title. It’s a marathon.
“Chelsea impress me more and more every day with Enzo. But the season is long. Many things can change. We’ve won six Premier League titles, and four or five of them came in seasons where we were chasing in December, January, or February.
“The champions are usually the team that develops and improves as the months go on. That is what we’re trying to achieve. Keeping injuries away is vital. If we keep pushing and refining how we handle situations and emotions, we’ll see where it leaves us.”
Ahead of Chelsea’s visit to Leeds, Maresca remained cautious about describing his team as title challengers.
“We’re only in December,” he said. “If we’re still in this position come February or March, then yes, we can say we’re in the title race. But if we’re not there at that point, then it doesn’t matter where we are now.
“After Leeds, we go into a run of eight matches in December alone. January is the same — another eight games. These two months are the most demanding.
“If we survive this period and remain up there by February or March, then we will absolutely be contenders. But right now, I can’t say where we’ll be by then.”
