Former NFL wide receiver Antonio Brown has been extradited to the United States to stand trial on an attempted murder charge connected to a shooting incident at a boxing event earlier this year.

A spokesperson for the U.S. Marshals Service told WTVJ-TV that Mr Brown arrived at Newark Liberty International Airport in New Jersey from Dubai on Thursday. Miami police officials confirmed that he will be further extradited from New Jersey to the Miami area to face trial.

According to jail records, Mr Brown is currently being held at the Essex County Jail in Newark, New Jersey.

The 36-year-old former American football star had been residing in Dubai since 11 June, when a warrant was issued for his arrest.

Mr Brown is accused of firing a gun at and attempting to kill 41-year-old Zul-Qarnain Kwame Nantambu during a boxing event in Miami hosted by influencer Adin Ross in May, according to the Miami Herald.

Reports indicate that Mr Brown and Mr Nantambu were acquainted prior to the alleged shooting. The former NFL player is said to have falsely accused Mr Nantambu of stealing $3 million (£2.4 million) worth of jewellery from him.

Mr Nantambu was reportedly detained in Oman and the United Arab Emirates before later being exonerated in court after it was proven that Mr Brown had fabricated the theft allegations, according to the Miami Herald.

In a post on X (formerly Twitter) on 17 May, Mr Brown wrote that he had been “jumped by multiple individuals who tried to steal my jewellery and cause physical harm to me,” referring to the incident that preceded the alleged shooting.
