Bayern Munich’s record-breaking start to the Bundesliga season came to a halt on Saturday as Harry Kane rescued a point in stoppage time with a 2–2 draw at Union Berlin.
Bayern Munich’s Historic Winning Run Ends in Dramatic Union Berlin Draw
Union had taken the lead through Danilho Doekhi, only for an extraordinary solo effort from Luis Diaz to level proceedings. Doekhi restored Union’s advantage late in the match, but Kane’s 93rd-minute strike — his 13th goal in 10 league games this season — ensured Bayern remained unbeaten.
“Winning so many games in a row is obviously incredible, but sometimes it becomes the main talking point and might motivate other teams a little more,” Kane told Sky. “We’re glad it wasn’t a loss, and we move on.”
Despite dropping points, Bayern remain six points clear at the top of the Bundesliga table, as RB Leipzig and Borussia Dortmund also slipped up on Saturday.
“It’s a really good point for us — we got a point and the competition didn’t,” said Bayern captain Manuel Neuer.
Bayern Struggle After Midweek Champions League Effort
Bayern had won 16 consecutive matches in all competitions to start the season, setting a record across Europe’s top-five leagues. However, the team looked fatigued following Tuesday’s 2–1 victory at Paris Saint-Germain, during which they had to play with 10 men for a large portion of the game.
Manager Vincent Kompany made only one change to the starting XI against Union, and Bayern struggled to assert themselves early on. Union had an initial goal disallowed for a marginal offside decision but eventually took the lead in the 27th minute when Doekhi slid the ball under Neuer from close range.
Bayern’s first genuine chance of the match saw Diaz conjure an improbable equaliser just before half-time, controlling the ball superbly and firing in from a tight angle after beating a defender.
Union regained the lead in the 83rd minute when Doekhi capitalised on a rebound, knocking the ball through a crowded penalty area into the corner. With Union poised for a historic first-ever win over Bayern, Kane’s stoppage-time strike secured a share of the spoils.
Union coach Steffen Baumgart hailed the performance as the club’s best since taking charge in January:
“That’s how you need to perform to get something against Bayern,” he told reporters.
Other Bundesliga Action
Elsewhere in the Bundesliga, Borussia Dortmund were held to a 1–1 draw at Hamburg, with Ransford-Yeboah Koenigsdoerffer scoring an equaliser in the seventh minute of added time. Dortmund, fresh from a 4–1 Champions League defeat to Manchester City, were solid but created few chances. Carney Chukwuemeka had put Dortmund ahead in the second half before Koenigsdoerffer’s late header denied them victory, preventing Niko Kovac’s side from closing the gap on Bayern.
RB Leipzig also dropped points for only the third time this season, losing 3–1 at Hoffenheim. Yan Diomande gave Leipzig an early lead in the ninth minute, scoring for the third consecutive game, but Hoffenheim hit back through Albian Hajdari and Tim Lemperle, with Grischa Prömel sealing the win in the 79th minute.
Bayer Leverkusen recorded their biggest win of the season with a 6–0 thrashing of Heidenheim at home, climbing to fourth place. Patrik Schick and Ibrahim Maza scored twice, while Jonas Hofmann and Ernest Poko also found the net.
Borussia Mönchengladbach were scheduled to host Cologne later on Saturday.
