Barcelona have moved a major step closer towards hosting a future UEFA Champions League final after receiving the necessary approvals to submit an official bid for the showpiece event at Spotify Camp Nou.

The Catalan giants have not staged a Champions League final since the iconic 1999 clash between Manchester United and Bayern Munich, when Sir Alex Ferguson’s side produced one of the competition’s greatest comebacks to win 2-1.

However, that long wait could soon come to an end.

Barcelona Preparing Bid for 2028/29 Final

In recent weeks, Barcelona officials have been working on plans to formally bid to host the 2028/29 Champions League final at the newly redeveloped Spotify Camp Nou.

The club had already secured backing from the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF), and according to reports from Sport, the Spanish Government has now also officially approved the proposal.

The latest development reportedly clears the final administrative hurdle required before Barcelona can officially submit their bid to UEFA.

Club executives are expected to present the proposal before UEFA’s submission deadline on June 10.

Spain Could Host Two Finals in Three Years

UEFA previously confirmed in September that Atletico Madrid’s Riyadh Air Metropolitano Stadium will host the 2026/27 Champions League final.

Should Barcelona’s bid prove successful, Spain would therefore stage two Champions League finals within a three-year period.

From Barcelona’s perspective, securing hosting rights would represent a major commercial and symbolic victory for the club.

Beyond the prestige associated with staging European football’s biggest club match, hosting the final would also generate significant financial revenue — something that remains especially important as Barcelona continue efforts to stabilise their long-term economic situation.

Espai Barca Project Progressing Towards Completion

By the time the proposed 2028/29 final arrives, Barcelona are confident the ambitious Espai Barca redevelopment project will be fully completed.

Construction work on the stadium’s third tier is expected to finish within the next 12 months, after which the installation of the new roof structure will begin.

Current projections suggest the entire redevelopment could be finalised by the summer of 2028, comfortably ahead of the proposed final date.

As a result, Barcelona believe there should be no major infrastructural concerns that could negatively affect their bid.

Wembley Stadium Also Interested

Once UEFA receive all official submissions, a final decision on the host venue is expected to be made in September.

Barcelona are believed to be strong contenders, although competition is likely to be intense.

Reports indicate that Wembley Stadium in London is also expected to submit a bid to host the final, setting up a potentially high-profile contest between two of European football’s most iconic stadiums.

For Barcelona, however, bringing the Champions League final back to Camp Nou after nearly three decades would represent another major milestone in the club’s ongoing modernisation project and a symbolic return to the centre of European football.
