Barcelona have reportedly ended their pursuit of Marcus Rashford, with the Spanish giants now prioritising moves for Anthony Gordon and Julian Alvarez instead, while fresh reports suggest Manchester United have no intention of reintegrating the England international into their plans.

Alarm bells are believed to have started ringing at Old Trafford after Barcelona moved swiftly to secure a deal for Newcastle United winger Anthony Gordon.

Manchester United had been hopeful that Barcelona would activate the €30 million (£26 million) option to make Rashford’s move permanent following his impressive loan spell with the Catalan club last season. However, the La Liga champions are now on the verge of completing a £75 million deal, including add-ons, for Gordon — a player who operates in the same left-wing position as Rashford.

Barcelona are also understood to be searching for another attacking reinforcement following the departure of veteran striker Robert Lewandowski, who left the club as a free agent. Unfortunately for United, the latest developments suggest Rashford is no longer part of Barcelona’s plans.

Reports in Spain indicate that Barcelona are preparing an official offer worth around €100 million for Atletico Madrid forward Julian Alvarez. The Argentine international is also said to be interested in the move, with Barcelona believed to be his preferred destination this summer.

Although speculation had suggested Rashford could still return to the Camp Nou even if both Gordon and Alvarez arrived, Spanish outlet RAC1 has now reported that any potential deal for the Manchester United forward would be completely abandoned should Alvarez complete his transfer.

According to the report, Barcelona view Gordon as a stronger overall option due to his defensive intensity, pressing ability and financial suitability.

The report stated: “Gordon arrives to replace Marcus Rashford, while offering improved footballing and financial conditions.

“From a football perspective, they consider him more intense defensively and better in pressing situations, with qualities similar to those of Raphinha. Overall, they believe he represents a stronger option than Rashford.

“Financially, he also occupies less space within the club’s fair play structure due to lower wages and favourable amortisation terms.

“Rashford is currently out of the club’s plans, and his continuity would only be reconsidered if the striker expected to replace Lewandowski does not arrive. Internally, that possibility is viewed as highly unlikely.”

Meanwhile, Rashford now appears set for a return to Old Trafford, although reports suggest he will not be reintegrated into Manchester United’s first-team plans.

Speaking on The United Stand, respected journalist Ben Jacobs claimed: “Manchester United do not want Rashford back.”

United’s stance has reportedly remained unchanged throughout the summer, with the club still keen to secure a permanent transfer for the forward. The expectation had been that Barcelona would trigger the agreed purchase clause, but with that option now seemingly off the table, the Red Devils may be forced to explore alternative solutions.

Aston Villa remain interested after Rashford enjoyed a successful six-month loan spell under Unai Emery during the second half of the 2024/25 campaign. Arsenal have also been tentatively linked with the England international in recent weeks.

However, the major complication for Manchester United is Rashford’s apparent determination to join Barcelona and no other club.

Reports claim the forward could reject approaches from other interested sides in the hope that Barcelona reconsider their stance later in the transfer window.

What initially appeared to be a straightforward permanent departure is now becoming an increasingly complicated situation for both Manchester United and Marcus Rashford.
