Barcelona overturned an early setback to secure a 3–1 win over Atlético Madrid on Tuesday night, strengthening their advantage at the top of La Liga to four points.

Atlético struck first through a superbly taken chip from Álex Baena, but their breakthrough was short-lived. Raphinha levelled the contest just six minutes later, and Barcelona were presented with a golden chance to take the lead before half-time when Pablo Barrios conceded a penalty — only for Robert Lewandowski to fire wildly over the bar.

Hansi Flick’s side controlled much of the second period and eventually completed the turnaround. Dani Olmo guided a precise finish into the bottom corner shortly after the hour, and Ferran Torres wrapped up the result deep into stoppage time to cap a deserved comeback.

Sports Mole Verdict

Barcelona still appear vulnerable when playing with a high defensive line, something Atlético exploited repeatedly. The visitors’ opener was a prime example, with Baena racing clear after the Catalans were caught far too advanced inside the opposition half.

Atlético continued to threaten that space and might easily have added more. Joan García produced a crucial stop from another Baena breakaway in the first half, while Thiago Almada squandered a huge opportunity in the closing stages after beating the offside trap.

Yet the Blaugrana’s aggressive positioning also contributed to their equaliser. Pedri, collecting the ball deep in his own half, was able to advance unchallenged due to Atlético’s retreating line before threading the perfect pass through to Raphinha for the leveller.

Although Flick will be encouraged by his team’s resilience and their ability to overturn the deficit, Diego Simeone will be frustrated by the volume of chances his side allowed. Renowned for their defensive solidity, Atlético astonishingly conceded 19 shots — six of them clear-cut — and Barcelona could have decided the contest well before the final whistle had they been more clinical.

Key Moments: Barcelona vs Atlético Madrid
19’ – Baena Gives Atlético the Lead (0–1)

Nahuel Molina sends a lofted pass over Barcelona’s high line into the path of Baena. The forward sprints clear, enters the box and delicately lifts the ball over the advancing Joan García with the outside of his boot.

26’ – Raphinha Levels the Score (1–1)

Pedri, afforded space to advance, slides a perfectly weighted pass between David Hancko and Clément Lenglet. Raphinha rounds Jan Oblak with his first touch and rolls the ball into an empty net with his second.

36’ – Lewandowski Penalty Miss

Barrios is penalised for fouling Dani Olmo, but Lewandowski blazes the resulting spot-kick high and wide to the left, failing to take advantage of a key chance.

65’ – Olmo Completes the Comeback (2–1)

After combining neatly with Lewandowski on the edge of the area, Olmo receives the return ball and sends a left-footed strike across goal into the far corner beyond Oblak.

90+6’ – Torres Seals the Win (3–1)

Rashford releases Alejandro Balde down the flank, and the full-back delivers a low cross to Ferran Torres, who controls inside the box before firing calmly into the far corner.

Man of the Match: Pedri

Pedri delivered a commanding midfield performance, dictating the rhythm of Barcelona’s play and initiating most of their meaningful attacks. His incisive pass created Raphinha’s equaliser, and he was instrumental again in the build-up to Olmo’s strike.
Across 74 minutes, he fashioned three chances in an exceptional display — particularly impressive given it was only his second match back from injury.
