Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Archie Gray has insisted he is unafraid of learning from mistakes after scoring his first professional goal in a vital 1–0 Premier League victory away at Crystal Palace.
Archie Gray Keen to Learn from Errors After Scoring First Senior Goal for Spurs
The 19-year-old came under scrutiny earlier this month following Tottenham’s 3–0 defeat at Nottingham Forest, where he was dispossessed on the edge of his own penalty area. However, head coach Thomas Frank publicly backed the teenager, who has since retained his place in the Spurs midfield.
Gray repaid that confidence at Selhurst Park, rising from close range to head home the decisive goal — his first in senior football — on his 112th professional appearance. The strike helped Tottenham secure only their second league win in nine matches.
Reflecting on his recent experiences, Gray acknowledged the challenges he has faced while emphasising the importance of resilience.
“It was a difficult game for me at Forest,” Gray said.
“The mistake was obviously my fault, but during that game I just tried to get on the ball as much as I could, be positive and forget about it.
“This wasn’t the best game either — it was scrappy — but to score a goal is something every child dreams of.”
Gray highlighted Tottenham’s defensive effort as key to the result.
“We knew that if we could keep a clean sheet, we would get chances to score. Our back four were amazing and everyone showed the right mentality.
“I was just in the right place at the right time. It was probably Richy’s flick that did all the work — I was two yards out.
“I didn’t really have much to do, but it’s an incredible feeling.”
Family Influence and Continued Development
Gray, who comes from a strong footballing background, revealed that he drew on the advice of his father — former Nottingham Forest forward Andy Gray — after his error at the City Ground.
After spending much of his debut season at Tottenham operating as a makeshift centre-back, the highly regarded youngster has relished his recent run in midfield and remains determined to continue his development.
Speaking to SpursPlay, Gray explained the mindset that has guided his response.
“My dad has always said to me that after you make a mistake, you should go and get on the ball and not be scared.
“That has stuck with me. I will never hide from the ball. It’s not something I have ever done or will do.
“Mistakes happen in football. You just have to learn from them, and I’ve been working every day in training to put things right.”
Gray’s maturity and willingness to learn underline why Tottenham remain confident in his long-term potential as he continues to grow into his role at the club.
