Trent Alexander-Arnold was reportedly disciplined by Real Madrid after breaching the club’s strict code of conduct in the build-up to their derby victory over Atlético Madrid.

Los Blancos secured a dramatic 3-2 win over their city rivals on Sunday, coming from behind to claim all three points. Vinícius Júnior netted twice, while Federico Valverde also found the scoresheet before being sent off.

Despite his recent strong performances, Alexander-Arnold was surprisingly omitted from the starting line-up, with Dani Carvajal preferred at right-back. The England international had established himself as a regular starter in recent weeks, featuring prominently in both La Liga and the UEFA Champions League.

However, Spanish outlet MARCA reports that his absence was not due to tactical considerations. Instead, it is claimed the defender arrived late for one of the team’s final training sessions of the week.

According to the report, manager Álvaro Arbeloa made the decision as a disciplinary measure, aiming to reinforce standards within the squad and uphold dressing room order.

Impact from the Bench

Alexander-Arnold was later introduced in the 64th minute, replacing Carvajal, and made an immediate impact by providing an assist for Vinícius Júnior’s second goal of the match.

Speaking after the game, Arbeloa declined to confirm whether the decision to bench the 27-year-old was disciplinary in nature.

“Every match I select the best possible starting XI,” he said.

“Dani Carvajal delivered an excellent performance, and I am very pleased with him. Trent also made a strong impact when he came on. I am fortunate to have several quality options, and it is important that everyone contributes as they did today.

“I repeat, for every game I choose what I believe to be the best line-up for the team.”

England Setback Ahead of World Cup

Alexander-Arnold’s situation at club level has been compounded by disappointment on the international stage. The defender was omitted from Thomas Tuchel’s latest England national team squad — the final selection before the upcoming FIFA World Cup.

His most recent appearance for England came in June against Andorra, marking his only outing under Tuchel so far. Despite the manager naming an expanded 35-man squad, Alexander-Arnold was overlooked.

With Reece James unavailable due to injury, Tuchel instead opted for alternatives including Tino Livramento, Djed Spence and Jarell Quansah.

Tuchel described the decision as a “sporting one” and admitted it was a difficult call. He also confirmed that he had not yet spoken directly with Alexander-Arnold regarding his omission.
