Wayne Rooney has praised the potential of Arsenal teenage sensation Max Dowman but has warned that fans should not expect to see too much of the 16-year-old for the remainder of the Premier League season.

Dowman made history on Saturday by becoming the Premier League’s youngest ever goalscorer, netting Arsenal’s second in a 2-0 home victory over Everton. The win proved crucial as the Gunners appeared poised to drop points, with late goals from Viktor Gyokeres and Dowman securing all three points.

The result, coupled with Manchester City’s failure to beat West Ham later in the day, means Arsenal now sit nine points clear at the top of the table with seven games remaining, edging closer to their first league title since 2004.

Fans have been captivated by Dowman, who made his Premier League debut in August, and many hope to see more of the England U19 star as Arsenal pursue a potential quadruple. In addition to the Premier League, Mikel Arteta’s side are competing in the Champions League knockout stages, the Carabao Cup final next weekend, and the FA Cup quarter-finals.

Despite speculation that Dowman could play a prominent role in these campaigns, Rooney believes the youngster’s game-time and development will be carefully managed.

“He has his GCSEs and his education, which I’m sure are important for him and his family,” the former Manchester United and England captain told The Wayne Rooney Show.

“What an opportunity for him to be around the squad. He could be a Premier League winner while still finishing school. He’s got an aura and a belief about him, which was evident against Everton. If education comes first, I don’t expect we’ll see much of him over the next few weeks.

“He won’t be on the pitch as much as he’d probably like, but he has many years ahead of him.”

Rooney added: “From the games I’ve watched, he doesn’t let the pressure affect him. He gets the ball, holds on to it, commits defenders, and takes them on. He clearly has confidence. Mikel Arteta and some senior players will ensure he doesn’t get ahead of himself, but it’s also important he enjoys the experience.

“Sometimes people mistake enjoying success for arrogance, but that’s not the case. With a young talent like him coming through at 16, he clearly has huge ability, and you hope he can fulfil that potential. Let him enjoy it and express himself.”

Gyokeres, who cost Arsenal £64 million, also praised Dowman following his decisive contribution against Everton.

“When you watch him play, you wouldn’t think he’s 16,” said Gyokeres. “The composure and confidence he shows with the ball are remarkable. Seeing him score that goal was incredible. He has been developing consistently.

“He missed some time due to injury, but now he’s back playing with the same confidence. He makes excellent decisions on the pitch and is clearly a very talented player.”

Arsenal will now turn their focus to the Champions League as they prepare for the second leg of their last-16 tie against Bayer Leverkusen. The Premier League leaders earned a 1-1 draw in the first leg in Germany, with Kai Havertz’s late penalty cancelling out Arsenal’s efforts.
