Thomas Tuchel has warned Jude Bellingham that no place in England’s starting line-up is guaranteed ahead of the World Cup, insisting competition for selection remains intense despite the Real Madrid star’s status within the squad.
Thomas Tuchel Tells Jude Bellingham He Must Earn Place in England’s World Cup Opener
England’s head coach made it clear that Bellingham remains one of his trusted players but stressed that several members of the group are capable of starting as the team prepares for its opening match against Croatia.
Speaking to reporters, Tuchel said:
“He is one of the starters, he knows he is one of the starters, but we have 14 or 15 potential starters.
“These roles can always change, but at the moment I think there are 14 or 15 proper starters and Jude is one of them.”
While emphasising competition within the squad, Tuchel also praised Bellingham’s recent form following his return from injury.
The England manager believes the 22-year-old has returned refreshed at a crucial moment ahead of the tournament.
“You can see Jude has for sure the decisiveness and bite.
“He comes back from an injury and is full of energy and happy to be back on the pitch.
“He had his break, unfortunately, in a decisive part of the season. But you can see now that he is actually in a sweet spot.
“He comes back, he’s fresh, he wants to play and he’s in top shape.”
Bellingham and Rogers Compete for Key Midfield Role
Bellingham strengthened his case for selection after making an impressive impact from the bench during England’s 1–0 warm-up victory over New Zealand in Tampa.
After replacing Morgan Rogers at half-time, the midfielder also took over captaincy duties and delivered an energetic display that intensified debate around England’s attacking midfield position.
The contest between Bellingham and Rogers has emerged as one of Tuchel’s most significant decisions ahead of the tournament.
Although Bellingham remains one of England’s highest-profile players alongside Harry Kane, an injury-affected season at Real Madrid means his place is not entirely beyond question.
Meanwhile, Rogers has developed into a serious contender following an outstanding campaign with Aston Villa.
The midfielder scored 14 goals during the season — several from long range — and added 11 assists while helping Villa secure Europa League success.
His consistency has also earned Tuchel’s trust, with Rogers featuring in 12 of the manager’s 13 matches in charge and appearing in all eight of England’s World Cup qualifying fixtures.
Midfield Balance Still Taking Shape
England’s midfield is expected to revolve around Declan Rice in a holding role, with Elliot Anderson offering energy and creativity further forward.
That setup leaves one major decision still unresolved — whether Tuchel opts for Bellingham’s elite-level experience and match-winning ability or Rogers’ consistency and tactical discipline.
With both players available, each has started once in recent matches, leaving the competition genuinely open.
Tuchel admitted he had mixed feelings following England’s victory over New Zealand.
“I’m OK with it.
“I like the second half more than the first half.
“We played more from our positions and that’s why we played with more speed and off the ball we played with a bit more bite.
“The first half we were out of positions and it was a bit too much freestyle.”
Kane Confident Ahead of Tournament
Harry Kane’s 79th England goal shortly before half-time proved decisive in Tampa and the captain insisted he is entering the tournament in excellent condition.
Kane said:
“Playing for England is my favourite thing to do.
“I wear the shirt with immense pride, I wear the armband with immense pride.
“To be able to lead another group of guys into another World Cup is obviously a special feeling.
“We go into it with high expectations.
“I feel as good as I’ve ever felt and it can’t come soon enough.”
England now travel to Orlando to face Costa Rica in their final warm-up fixture, a match which could provide the clearest indication yet of Tuchel’s preferred line-up before the World Cup begins.
