Supercomputer Predicts Champions League Winner Following Dramatic Semi-Final First Legs

The first legs of the UEFA Champions League semi-finals delivered two contrasting yet equally compelling encounters this week, as four of Europe’s elite clubs battled for a place in the 2026 final.

On Tuesday evening, Paris Saint-Germain hosted Bayern Munich at the Parc des Princes in a thrilling contest between two of the continent’s most potent attacking sides. Twenty-four hours later, Arsenal travelled to face Atlético Madrid at the Metropolitano, where tactical discipline took centre stage.

The clash in Paris lived up to its billing, with PSG edging a remarkable 5–4 victory in a high-tempo encounter that featured seven different goalscorers and relentless end-to-end action — a match likely to be remembered for years to come.

By contrast, the meeting in Madrid was more measured in its approach, though no less significant. The tie ended 1–1, with Viktor Gyökeres and Julián Álvarez both converting penalties to leave the contest finely poised ahead of the return leg.

With the decisive second legs set to take place in May, data analysts at Opta have updated their supercomputer projections for the 2025–26 Champions League title.

Arsenal Lead Supercomputer Predictions

Opta’s model continues to favour Arsenal as the most likely winners of the competition, assigning Mikel Arteta’s side a 39.13 per cent chance of lifting the trophy in Budapest.

The Gunners have enjoyed an outstanding European campaign, remaining unbeaten throughout the competition. They recorded a perfect league-phase performance before progressing through the knockout rounds without defeat, eliminating Bayer Leverkusen and Sporting CP.

Despite criticism in some quarters regarding their pragmatic style of play, Arsenal’s consistency and defensive solidity have positioned them as the leading contenders.

PSG and Bayern Remain Strong Challengers

PSG are ranked as the second favourites, with a 30.83 per cent probability of successfully defending their European title. Under Luis Enrique, the French champions have shown resilience, overcoming an inconsistent league phase to excel in the knockout rounds, where they have scored 22 goals and eliminated AS Monaco, Chelsea FC and Liverpool FC.

Bayern Munich remain close behind, with a 22.20 per cent chance of claiming their first Champions League title since 2020. Managed by Vincent Kompany, the German side finished strongly in the league phase before comfortably overcoming Atalanta BC in the round of 16 and edging past Real Madrid in a closely contested quarter-final.

However, they must first overturn their deficit against PSG in the second leg to keep their hopes alive.

Atletico Given Outside Chance

Opta’s projections place Atlético Madrid as clear outsiders, with just a 7.84 per cent chance of lifting the trophy.

Even if Diego Simeone’s side were to overcome Arsenal, the model suggests they would struggle against either PSG or Bayern in the final. Nevertheless, Atlético have already defied expectations in this season’s competition, having eliminated FC Barcelona in the quarter-finals despite being widely overlooked.
