Sheffield United loanee Chiedozie Ogbene played a pivotal role in the Republic of Ireland’s impressive 2–0 victory over Portugal on Thursday evening at the Aviva Stadium in Dublin.

Ogbene, who is currently on loan from Ipswich Town, started the match and was instrumental in helping Heimir Hallgrímsson’s side claim a crucial three points in their bid to qualify for next year’s World Cup. The Republic of Ireland secured the win thanks to a first-half brace from striker Troy Parrott, while Portugal were reduced to ten men in the second half after Cristiano Ronaldo was sent off.

The victory lifts the Republic of Ireland to seven points in Group F, placing them third — just one point behind second-placed Hungary, whom they are set to face in a decisive final qualifier in Budapest on Sunday afternoon. Portugal remain top of the group on ten points and are widely expected to defeat bottom-of-the-table Armenia in their final fixture, which would see them seal top spot.

As a result, Hungary and the Republic of Ireland are poised for a straight fight for second place, which guarantees a place in the World Cup play-offs in March. Ireland must win in Budapest to secure second position, while a draw would be enough for Hungary, who defeated Armenia away from home on Thursday night.

Ogbene’s impact in a landmark win

Ogbene, formerly of Rotherham United, was influential throughout Thursday’s historic victory. He came agonisingly close to scoring in the first half, striking the post, and continually pressed and harried the Portuguese defence both on and off the ball. His relentless running and blistering pace on the counter-attack were central to Hallgrímsson’s tactical approach.

The winger, who has made ten appearances for the Blades this season, played a decisive role in helping the Republic of Ireland edge closer to their first World Cup appearance since 2002. He registered 86 minutes on the pitch, and in addition to hitting the post, recorded 28 touches, completed 79 per cent of his passes, delivered two key passes, made one interception, and won two fouls — capping off a highly productive evening.
