Denver Broncos head coach Sean Payton paid tribute to the Las Vegas Raiders following his team’s narrow 10–7 victory on Thursday Night Football in Week 10. However, despite the win, Payton made it clear that his players must raise their standards as tougher challenges await.

The Broncos relied heavily on their defence, which delivered an outstanding performance — sacking Raiders quarterback Geno Smith six times and intercepting him once. The team also managed to block a punt and benefited from a missed field goal.

Yet, after such a gruelling contest, Payton had a firm message for his squad about maintaining focus and consistency in the weeks ahead.

Payton Warns Players Ahead of Clash with Chiefs

While the Broncos have shown flashes of brilliance in previous games, including fourth-quarter comebacks, those heroics were absent against the struggling 2–6 Raiders.

Looking ahead, Denver face a formidable challenge next week against the Kansas City Chiefs, a fixture Payton has already set his sights on.

“It was a short week [in Week 9]. These guys will be back Monday, and we know we’ve got a big one coming up against Kansas City,” Payton told reporters on 6 November. “The staff and the players will have this time away. One of the tough things about Thursday Night Football is the short week and the preparation. The positive is that, if you win, you have that mini break afterwards. But the turnaround is tough, and the lads handled it well.”

Last season, the Broncos split their two meetings with the Chiefs, claiming victory in Week 18 when Kansas City rested several starters ahead of the postseason.

The Chiefs, currently 5–4 and coming off a bye in Week 10, remain a battle-tested side led by Patrick Mahomes. Denver will almost certainly need another exceptional defensive display to compete.

Broncos Must Eliminate Costly Mistakes

Payton admitted that the Raiders’ defensive schemes caught the Broncos off guard at times, though he dismissed the idea that wind conditions significantly affected the match.

He also criticised some of his own play-calling decisions, including Wil Lutz’s missed 59-yard field goal attempt and a third-down trick play involving wide receiver Courtland Sutton, who wisely chose not to throw the ball.

When asked whether he was comfortable with the team’s current trend, Payton’s response was forthright.

“We’ve got to clean up the penalties. We’ve got to clean up some of the execution, and that’s an ongoing process that probably never ends. You search for that ‘Shangri-La.’ Right now, we’re a team that’s sitting at eight wins — I think we’re the only team sitting there,” he said. “And yet, we’re constantly looking internally. It was a tough night offensively, obviously.

“You start looking at your call sheet, with your substitution plan, and so, we’ll review that tape and learn from it — we always do.”

Denver’s late-game heroics have masked their offensive inconsistency in recent weeks, but Thursday’s showing exposed those issues once more. The Broncos recorded a season-low 220 total net yards, underscoring the need for improvement on that side of the ball.

Historic Low in Broncos-Raiders Encounter

The Broncos’ clash with the Raiders also entered the NFL record books for an unusual reason.

“Broncos and Raiders each had more penalties than first downs tonight,” wrote Next Gen Stats’ Bill Smith on X (formerly Twitter) on 6 November. “Only the second time since 1950 this has happened — fittingly, the first was a battle between two 0–5 expansion teams in 1976.”

The AFC West rivals are scheduled to meet again in Week 14, this time in Las Vegas.
