Danny Röhl acknowledged the frustration of Rangers supporters who booed the team following their dramatic 2–2 draw with Dundee United, but he insists his side are moving in the right direction.
Röhl Sees Rangers Progress Despite Fans’ Boos After Tannadice Draw
United striker Zac Sapsford opened the scoring in the 11th minute, before left-back Jayden Meghoma levelled twelve minutes later with his first goal for the Gers since joining on loan from Brentford.
Amar Fatah restored United’s lead in the 66th minute, but deep into added time — in the sixth of six additional minutes — substitute Max Aarons was brought down in the box by Will Ferry. Nedim Bajrami stepped up and blasted the resulting penalty high into the net. Despite rescuing a point, several members of the travelling support booed and jeered the Rangers players at full-time.
Rangers remain unbeaten in six William Hill Premiership matches under Röhl and sit fourth in the table, nine points behind leaders Hearts, who were held at home by Kilmarnock, and also nine behind Celtic, who defeated Dundee 1–0.
Röhl said:
“I understand the fans’ reaction. They came here on a Wednesday evening — 6,000 people — and they spend money to come to these games.
For me, I have to find the right balance and be a good mirror for this group. If we win games, I’m not too positive, and if we lose games, I’m not too negative.”
Reflecting on recent performances, he added:
“If I see something not going in the right direction, I’m very clear. I said the last game (0–0 draw with Falkirk) was too slow. We didn’t attack enough. But tonight I saw a team capable of doing it. It’s about being ruthless in both boxes — that’s the key.
If we do that, we can take steps forward. My job is to find the right balance after this emotional game.”
Röhl praised his team’s mentality:
“The team showed fight to the end to get something. At the weekend we didn’t create many chances — but tonight we had chances for maybe four games. But the other part is that on Sunday we kept a clean sheet, and tonight we didn’t.
If we can combine the clean sheet with the style we played with tonight, we’ll get a lot of points. Of course, we’re disappointed, and I understand the fans. I can take it. But we made a massive step from Falkirk to today.”
Dundee United manager Jim Goodwin was left bitterly disappointed by the late equaliser.
He said:
“Right now, it feels very much like a defeat. When you concede so late, under those circumstances, it’s a really sore one to take, especially after putting so much into the game.
We defended well, and my goalkeeper made big saves at key moments. But if we get to that ball on the edge of the box in the 96th or 97th minute, I’m sure the referee blows for full-time and it’s a memorable night here at Tannadice with a really valuable three points.”
