Pep Guardiola has admitted that facing Liverpool under Jürgen Klopp presented a greater challenge during his managerial career than battling Real Madrid, despite Manchester City’s recent Champions League exit.

Manchester City were eliminated from Europe’s premier club competition after a 5–1 aggregate defeat to Real Madrid in the round of 16. This follows previous disappointments against the Spanish giants, including a penalty shootout loss last season and elimination in the 2021–22 campaign.

However, Guardiola reflected on his battles with Klopp in the Premier League as being his most formative and difficult experiences. The two sides went head-to-head in multiple title races, with Liverpool ending their 30-year wait for an English league championship in 2020 under Klopp.

Speaking after the loss to Real Madrid, Guardiola said:
"No, Jürgen Klopp at Liverpool was my biggest challenge. You almost don’t realise what it was like to face Liverpool. Those games were a great learning experience for the team, because to play a team like us who had not been in the competition 12 or 13 years ago, and the generation we had, they had won those games sometimes. Real Madrid have beaten us, we’ve won some, we’ve had great times as well, but I think the teams we’ve played against also know they’ve played us too."

Guardiola noted the difficulty of winning at Anfield with the support of Liverpool fans, something he only achieved earlier this season when Manchester City defeated Arne Slot’s side 2–1 at the famous stadium.

"It’s so difficult. Anfield is Anfield," he added. "The tradition, the history, the crowd. It looks smaller, tighter, the pitch does not look the size of the Etihad. The players they have and everything. Of course we would be disappointed [if we lost] and the questions would be it’s over. Six is better than nine but it’s still a lot considering Arsenal and how strong they are in all departments."

Guardiola’s remarks underline the intensity of the Premier League rivalry with Liverpool and the high regard he holds for Klopp’s managerial abilities, despite City’s European setbacks.
