Hugo Ekitike, rather than Florian Wirtz, emerged as the standout figure for Liverpool after Clinton Morrison heaped praise on the striker following the Reds’ 2–1 victory over Wolves at Anfield.
‘Outrageous’ Hugo Ekitike Steals the Spotlight as Liverpool Edge Past Wolves
Liverpool climbed into fourth place in the Premier League with a hard-fought win on Saturday afternoon, though the contest proved more uncomfortable than the scoreline initially suggested. Arne Slot’s side went into the break with a two-goal cushion after Ryan Gravenberch and Wirtz struck within two minutes of each other, both delivering impressive performances on Merseyside.
Wolves, still searching for their first league win of the season, pulled a goal back shortly after half-time. Santiago Bueno capitalised from a corner in the 51st minute, finishing into an unguarded net after Alisson Becker was left grounded following an excellent initial save. Despite the pressure that followed, Liverpool held firm to secure all three points.
The victory was further boosted by Chelsea’s 2–1 defeat to Aston Villa, allowing the Reds to move into the top four. While results have improved in recent weeks, questions remain over Liverpool’s overall performances as Slot attempts to move on from a difficult autumn period.
Clinton Morrison Praises Ekitike’s Influence
Although he did not find the net, Ekitike once again played a pivotal role and has continued to justify claims that he has been Liverpool’s most effective summer signing. The French forward struck the post early on and was instrumental in the build-up to the goals.
His standout moment came with the assist for Wirtz’s first goal in a Liverpool shirt. Collecting possession just inside his own half, Ekitike produced a perfectly weighted through ball for the German international, who finished confidently at the Anfield Road end.
Watching the match for Sky Sports Soccer Saturday, former Crystal Palace and Coventry City striker Clinton Morrison was effusive in his praise.
“Ekitike is outrageous. It is game over,” Morrison said.
Morrison had already spoken highly of the striker before kick-off, highlighting his confidence and freedom in possession.
“Ekitike doesn’t worry about who is around him. He plays with so much ability, fun and freedom, and the one thing he is doing is scoring goals. He has been a hell of a signing, and even if Alexander Isak was fit, he would be Liverpool’s number nine right now.”
Ekitike arrived at Anfield in excellent form, having scored five goals in his previous three appearances, and added another assist to his growing list of contributions against Wolves. He now has 11 goals and two assists in 25 appearances for the club.
Arne Slot Explains Ekitike’s Rise in Form
Speaking ahead of the Wolves fixture, Liverpool head coach Arne Slot offered insight into the work that has underpinned Ekitike’s recent performances.
“I think he has shown a lot of hard work to get to this fitness level where he is at the moment,” Slot said.
“It sometimes took me a bit of convincing that all of this was actually needed to become stronger, but he always did it — not always with a smile on his face.
“He has worked really hard to get fitter and fitter, on and off the pitch. I’ve also tried to convince him that the better you defend a set-piece, the bigger chance you have to score at the other end.”
Slot also emphasised the importance of defensive solidity in supporting attacking output, noting how conceding goals can affect momentum and energy levels.
“For him to score goals, it’s important that we hardly concede, especially from set-pieces. He has worked very hard to get where he is now and I think he is ready for the programme we are facing,” Slot added.
The Liverpool boss also pointed out that Ekitike is not his only option up front, with Federico Chiesa capable of operating as a central striker when rotation is required.
