Ollie Watkins has revealed that the calm and composed approach of manager Unai Emery played a crucial role in guiding Aston Villa to their historic Europa League triumph.

Villa produced a commanding performance in Istanbul as goals from Youri Tielemans, Emiliano Buendia and Morgan Rogers sealed an emphatic 3-0 victory over SC Freiburg in the Europa League final.

The win ended Villa’s 30-year wait for major silverware and secured the club’s first European trophy since 1982.

Watkins Praises Emery’s Composure

Speaking after the final whistle, Watkins explained how Emery’s relaxed demeanour before kick-off helped settle the squad ahead of the biggest match of the season.

“He was really calm today in the build-up,” Watkins said.

“Sometimes in league games he’s anxious because he wants to get the win, but today he was calm and that set the tone for us boys.”

Emery further enhanced his remarkable reputation in European football by claiming a fifth Europa League title as a manager, reinforcing his status as one of the competition’s greatest-ever coaches.

Set-Pieces Proved Decisive

Watkins also highlighted the importance of Villa’s set-piece preparation, with Tielemans opening the scoring from a brilliantly executed corner routine.

The England striker praised Villa’s set-piece coach Austin MacPhee for the tactical bravery shown during the match.

“I’ve watched many finals and I think set-pieces are crucial,” Watkins explained.

“Until then it was a bit cagey, they were going man-for-man. Fair play to Austin MacPhee for having the courage — we left four players up from a corner.”

Watkins felt Villa completely controlled the contest after breaking the deadlock.

“To perform like that was unbelievable. I felt like we really controlled the game and we punished them in the end.”

‘It’s What You Dream Of’

The Villa forward also reflected emotionally on the significance of lifting a major trophy with the club after years of rebuilding and progression under Emery.

“An unbelievable experience. Look at this. It’s what you dream of,” Watkins said.

“Sometimes you have ups and downs but we pulled through in the end, we pushed on, we got Champions League football. It’s so special.”

“All of these fans — it’s indescribable.”

Villa captain John McGinn also paid tribute to Emery following the victory.

“With this manager in charge, anything is possible,” McGinn declared.

The triumph crowns an outstanding campaign for Aston Villa, who have not only secured European silverware but also qualified for next season’s UEFA Champions League under Emery’s leadership.
