The Bayern Munich forward opened the scoring in the 32nd minute after being played through by Abdallah Sima, giving Senegal the lead after they had controlled much of the early possession.

However, Mozambique responded in first-half stoppage time when Geny Catamo found the net to restore parity before the interval. The hosts subsequently held Senegal to a draw in a competitive opening encounter.
