Troilo Header Derails Rossoneri Title Bid While Napoli Condemn ‘Shameful’ Decisions
Milan Stunned by Parma as Napoli Launch Furious Attack on Officiating
AC Milan suffered a damaging 1–0 home defeat to Parma Calcio 1913 on Sunday, a result that leaves city rivals Inter Milan 10 points clear at the summit of Serie A.
Defender Mariano Troilo headed home late on to seal a shock victory for Parma at San Siro, compounding a frustrating week for Milan, who had already dropped points in a draw with Como 1907.
With Inter having secured a 2–0 win over US Lecce on Saturday, Milan failed to respond and slipped to their first league defeat since the opening weekend of the campaign.
Assistant coach Marco Landucci, standing in for the suspended Massimiliano Allegri, admitted his side had fallen short.
“We are obviously disappointed,” Landucci told Sky Sport. “Parma performed very well and, at times, the ball simply would not go in for us. We wanted all three points, but we must move forward.”
Milan’s problems began even before kick-off, with Matteo Gabbia withdrawing during the warm-up due to a muscle issue. Matters worsened early in the contest when Ruben Loftus-Cheek was stretchered off following a collision with Parma goalkeeper Edoardo Corvi.
Loftus-Cheek departed wearing a neck brace, with reports indicating he would undergo hospital tests for possible head trauma and require dental treatment.
Milan created openings before the interval, notably when Alexis Saelemaekers teed up Christian Pulisic, whose effort was well saved by Corvi. Pulisic also fired narrowly wide moments before half-time.
Despite dominating possession in the second half, the Rossoneri struggled to fashion clear-cut opportunities. Parma capitalised in the 80th minute as Troilo headed home, although the goal was initially disallowed for a foul by Lautaro Valenti on goalkeeper Mike Maignan.
Following an extended VAR review, the referee overturned his original decision and awarded the goal, leaving Milan’s title hopes hanging precariously.
Napoli Rage After Defeat at Atalanta
Elsewhere, SSC Napoli reacted angrily to what they described as “shameful” officiating following a 2–1 defeat at Atalanta BC.
Napoli were incensed after a penalty award was rescinded and a goal ruled out during the first half, prompting an outspoken response from sporting director Giovanni Manna.
“Where is the foul? VAR intervened for the penalty — why not for this?” Manna told DAZN. “It is embarrassing. Every week a club finds itself protesting decisions. We only want fairness. This is not right, and it is not football. It is shameful.”
Atalanta, who extended their unbeaten league run to nine matches under Raffaele Palladino, remain seventh in the standings, five points behind both Napoli and AS Roma in the race for Champions League qualification.
Roma climbed to third courtesy of a 3–0 home victory over US Cremonese, with second-half goals from Bryan Cristante, Evan Ndicka and Niccolò Pisilli.
Reigning champions Napoli have now slipped to fourth, trailing Inter by 14 points.
Atalanta seized the initiative early when Sam Beukema headed home from Miguel Gutiérrez’s free-kick, with Napoli’s defence caught unmarked.
The hosts equalised shortly after the hour through Mario Pašalić, who glanced a header into the corner from Nicola Zalewski’s delivery.
Atalanta completed the turnaround nine minutes from time as Lazar Samardžić looped a header into the far corner from Lorenzo Bernasconi’s cross.
The Bergamo side will now shift focus to their forthcoming Champions League knockout play-off second leg against Borussia Dortmund, seeking to overturn a 2–0 deficit.
