Reports suggesting that FC Barcelona’s option to sign Marcus Rashford on a permanent basis has expired are understood to be inaccurate.
Marcus Rashford Transfer Clause Remains Active Amid Barcelona Speculation
Manchester United included a £26 million (€30 million) purchase clause in Rashford’s loan agreement, and that option remains valid despite contrary claims emerging from Spain.
There has been increasing speculation in Spanish media that Barcelona are seeking to negotiate a reduced fee for the England international at the end of the season. However, United have made their position clear, insisting that the agreed £26 million fee must be met if the Catalan club wish to secure the forward’s services permanently.
United are confident they will be able to sell Rashford during the summer transfer window should Barcelona decide not to activate the clause. Nevertheless, the Spanish side are keen to retain him at the Camp Nou.
The Premier League club are reportedly unwilling to accept a lower offer, as they aim to reinforce their standing and negotiating strength in the transfer market.
Speaking to RAC1 last month, Barcelona president Joan Laporta expressed the club’s desire to keep Rashford beyond the current campaign.
“We will try, in Barcelona’s interest, to ensure that Marcus Rashford can continue with us beyond this season,” Laporta said.
“He is performing very well, contributing both goals and assists, and we are pleased with him. Extending the loan is also a possibility. It depends on what Deco wants. There are various options, such as paying part of the transfer fee now and settling the remainder later.”
Rashford has recorded 10 goals and 13 assists in 39 appearances for Barcelona this season. In September, head coach Hansi Flick praised the forward’s impact, describing him as “fantastic” and highlighting his “unbelievable” finishing after a brace against Newcastle United at St James’ Park in the UEFA Champions League.
Barcelona’s financial situation, which was under significant strain in 2022, has since improved. The club are currently on course to challenge for the La Liga title, while Flick’s side have also progressed to the quarter-finals of the Champions League this season.
