Manchester United are reportedly preparing to begin formal discussions with former midfielder Michael Carrick over becoming the club’s next permanent manager.
Manchester United Set to Open Talks With Michael Carrick Over Permanent Managerial Role
The 44-year-old was appointed interim boss in January following the dismissal of Ruben Amorim and has since overseen a remarkable turnaround in fortunes at Old Trafford.
Carrick has impressed during his temporary spell in charge, winning 10 of his 15 matches and guiding United back into the UEFA Champions League places.
According to reports from Sky Sports, Manchester United are now ready to hold formal talks with Carrick regarding a permanent appointment, with discussions expected to begin before the club’s final Premier League fixture of the season away to Brighton & Hove Albion on 24 May.
Carrick is currently understood to be the preferred candidate among the United hierarchy, although the club’s board have not entirely ruled out considering alternative managerial options.
Club officials are said to be particularly impressed by Carrick’s relationship with the squad, his composed handling of media duties, and his deep understanding of the club’s traditions, stature and expectations.
However, it is his results on the pitch that have strengthened his position most significantly.
Under Carrick’s guidance, United have climbed to third place in the Premier League table and secured qualification for next season’s Champions League following a dramatic 3-2 victory over fierce rivals Liverpool at Old Trafford.
Since taking charge, Carrick’s side have accumulated 33 points from 15 league matches — the highest total in the division during that period.
United also recorded impressive victories over Manchester City and Arsenal in Carrick’s opening two matches as interim manager, while further wins against Aston Villa, Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur have enhanced his credentials.
Despite the club’s admiration for Carrick’s work, Manchester United have remained determined to assess multiple managerial possibilities before making a final decision.
Nevertheless, reports now suggest negotiations are expected to commence within days, with no major obstacles anticipated in reaching an agreement.
Carrick previously served as Manchester United’s caretaker manager in 2021 following the departure of Ole Gunnar Solskjær.
He later took charge of Middlesbrough in 2022 and became one of the Championship’s longest-serving managers before leaving the club in June 2025 after narrowly missing out on the play-offs.
As a player, Carrick made 464 appearances for Manchester United, winning five Premier League titles and lifting the Champions League trophy in 2008.
