Manchester United have confirmed that Jadon Sancho will leave the club on a free transfer this summer following the expiry of his contract, bringing an end to a disappointing spell at Old Trafford.

Sancho arrived at United from Borussia Dortmund in 2021 in a deal worth £72.9 million ($100.7 million) and signed a five-year contract which included an option for the club to extend his stay by a further 12 months.

However, after a difficult period in Manchester, United have decided against activating that clause, allowing the winger to depart at the end of the month.

Sancho’s departure comes as part of a wider squad reshaping, with Casemiro and left-back Tyrell Malacia also leaving the club.

From One of Europe’s Brightest Talents to a Difficult Old Trafford Spell

When United completed the signing of Sancho in 2021, the transfer was widely viewed as one of the standout deals of the window.

At just 21 years of age, Sancho had established himself as one of Europe’s most exciting attacking talents during his time in Germany.

Across three full Bundesliga seasons with Borussia Dortmund, he produced 37 goals and 47 assists in only 92 league appearances, prompting many to believe United had secured one of football’s most sought-after young stars.

Then-manager Ole Gunnar Solskjær spoke confidently about Sancho’s future at the club upon his arrival.

“He will form an integral part of my squad for years to come and we look forward to seeing him blossom.”

However, adapting to Premier League football proved more difficult than anticipated.

Across his opening 14 appearances under Solskjær, Sancho failed to register either a goal or an assist as he struggled to adjust to the physical and tactical demands of English football.

Expectations remained exceptionally high and scrutiny quickly intensified.

Relationship Breakdown and Series of Loan Moves

Sancho’s challenges continued under Erik ten Hag.

Initially backed by the Dutch manager, the winger later experienced a difficult period which extended beyond performances on the pitch.

In late 2022, Ten Hag acknowledged that Sancho had been dealing with physical and personal challenges while working to return to full condition.

The relationship later deteriorated publicly in September 2023 after Ten Hag suggested Sancho had been omitted from a squad due to training performances.

Sancho responded publicly, rejecting those claims and insisting he had been unfairly treated.

Following the dispute, he departed on loan to Borussia Dortmund for the remainder of the 2023–24 campaign.

Back in Germany, Sancho showed flashes of his previous form and helped Dortmund reach the UEFA Champions League final, including a notable display in the semi-final against Paris Saint-Germain.

Despite attempts to rebuild momentum afterwards, subsequent loan spells failed to deliver a lasting revival.

Moves to Chelsea and later Aston Villa did not result in permanent transfers, with playing opportunities remaining limited.

A Fresh Start Ahead

Assessing Sancho’s time at Manchester United remains complex.

There is little doubt expectations were enormous following his arrival, while adapting from the Bundesliga to the demands and intensity of the Premier League appeared more difficult than many anticipated.

Questions have also surrounded fit, confidence and circumstances across different managerial periods.

Now, with his United chapter officially coming to an end, Sancho begins searching for a new opportunity to restart a career that once placed him among Europe’s most highly regarded young players.

For Manchester United, the decision closes the book on a transfer that ultimately never delivered the impact many expected.
