Manchester City have confirmed that striker Omar Marmoush will miss Sunday’s Premier League clash against Manchester United after sustaining a knee injury while on international duty with Egypt.

The 26-year-old was forced off early in Egypt’s World Cup qualifier against Burkina Faso on Tuesday.

“Initial scan results carried out in Egypt indicate he will not be available for the Manchester derby on Sunday. He will now return to Manchester for further assessment and to begin his rehabilitation,” City said in a statement on Wednesday. “Everyone at City wishes Omar a speedy recovery.”

Marmoush now joins City’s growing injury list, which already includes John Stones and Phil Foden, both of whom missed recent international fixtures.

The club has not provided a timeframe for his return, though City are set to begin their Champions League campaign against Napoli on 18 September.

Egypt’s qualifier ended in a goalless draw, leaving them waiting to secure their place at next year’s World Cup.
