Manchester City came from behind to defeat Real Madrid 2–1 in the Champions League on Wednesday night, leaving Xabi Alonso’s position as head coach of the Spanish giants in serious jeopardy.

Real Madrid, without injured star forward Kylian Mbappé, took the lead through Rodrygo Goes. However, goals from Nico O’Reilly and an Erling Haaland penalty turned the match around before half-time, securing a crucial victory for Pep Guardiola’s side at a tense and increasingly frustrated Santiago Bernabéu.

Spanish media had widely reported before kick-off that a defeat would place Alonso on the brink of dismissal. Despite a spirited performance from his team, pressure continues to mount on the Basque coach.

Real Madrid, 15-time European champions, have now won only two of their last eight matches in all competitions and are battling to secure a place in the top eight of the league phase.

Guardiola admitted that City had been outplayed in the early stages, saying:

“Until the goal we scored, they were much better. We’ve played much better here in the past and not won.”

Mbappé Left Out as Precaution

Alonso opted to leave Mbappé on the bench due to lingering knee discomfort, describing the decision as necessary to avoid “a risk”. He instead handed a start to 21-year-old forward Gonzalo García.

Real Madrid eliminated Manchester City in last season’s Champions League play-off round, with Mbappé scoring four goals across the 6–3 aggregate win.

This time, however, the home crowd grew restless. Madrid supporters whistled during the second half as their side struggled to find an equaliser.

Rodrygo acknowledged the fans’ frustrations, telling Movistar:

“It’s normal — Madrid is a very demanding club with demanding fans. It’s fair. We have to accept it and improve.”

Rodrygo Ends Long Goal Drought

The match, the 15th meeting between the two clubs in this modern European rivalry, began at a frantic pace. Vinícius Júnior was heavily involved early on and won a free-kick just outside the area following a VAR review, overturning an initial penalty decision.

Madrid’s impressive start was rewarded in the 28th minute when Rodrygo finished a sweeping move that began with Álvaro Carreras. Jude Bellingham played the decisive pass before Rodrygo drilled a low strike past Gianluigi Donnarumma. It was his first goal in 33 club appearances, ending a long and frustrating drought, and his fifth career goal against City.

Rodrygo’s emotional embrace with Alonso on the touchline was deliberate:

“It’s a difficult moment for us and for him. Things aren’t going well… we wanted to show that we’re with the coach.”

Courtois Error Proves Costly

Madrid’s strong opening half-hour was undone by a rare mistake from Thibaut Courtois. The Belgian goalkeeper failed to hold Josko Gvardiol’s header, allowing O’Reilly to pounce and level the score in the 35th minute.

City then completed the turnaround before the interval when Antonio Rüdiger hauled Haaland to the ground inside the box. Haaland converted the resulting penalty with his characteristic composure.

Courtois redeemed himself shortly afterwards with a superb double save to deny both Haaland and Rayan Cherki. He also frustrated Jeremy Doku early in the second half.

Alonso Turns to Youth but Pressure Mounts

With Madrid lacking creativity after the break, Alonso introduced young forward Endrick — rarely used since the manager’s arrival. The Brazilian came close to a dramatic equaliser, clipping the crossbar in the closing minutes.

Ultimately, Madrid lacked ideas, and the defeat has intensified calls for change at the club.

Defender Raúl Asencio offered his backing to the under-fire coach:

“The dressing room is with Xabi Alonso,” he said, praising the squad’s attitude — a message that will give club president Florentino Pérez plenty to consider.
