A 40-year-old man accused of murdering non-league footballer Tyler Fairman has appeared before Nottingham Crown Court.
Man Charged Over Death of Non-League Footballer Appears in Court
Duane Anthony, of Marton Road, Bulwell, appeared via video link from HMP Manchester on Monday in connection with the incident which took place in Arnold earlier this year.
Anthony is charged with murder, five counts of attempted murder and driving while disqualified.
During the brief eight-minute hearing, the defendant was not required to enter pleas after his legal representatives requested additional time to consult with him.
The charges relate to an incident in Market Place, Arnold, during the early hours of Saturday, 9 May, in which a Vauxhall Astra allegedly struck a group of pedestrians.
Tyler Fairman, who played for Woodthorpe Park Rangers, later died in hospital three days after the incident.
Members of Mr Fairman’s family attended Monday’s hearing.
Following legal submissions, Judge Nirmal Shant KC adjourned proceedings and informed Anthony that he would be required to appear in person at court on 29 June ahead of the trial, which is currently scheduled to begin on 7 October.
Incident Followed End-of-Season Event
Woodthorpe Park Rangers had previously confirmed that three members of the club, including the team manager, were struck by a vehicle following an end-of-season awards event.
The incident shocked the local football community and prompted an outpouring of tributes following Mr Fairman’s death.
Family Pays Tribute to Tyler Fairman
In a tribute released last month, Mr Fairman’s family remembered the 26-year-old as a caring and selfless person whose loss had deeply affected those around him.
The statement read:
“There are no words now, nor will there ever be, to truly describe how broken this has left us all.
Our hearts are shattered, and the world has become a much darker place without him in it.”
The family continued:
“Anyone who knew Tyler knew there was never a bad word to say about him. He was the kind of person who would do anything for anybody.
He was always there for everyone and was a devoted partner, a loyal friend, a loving son and a father figure to so many people around him.
If somebody needed support, Tyler would be there in a heartbeat.”
Court proceedings are continuing.
