Roberto De Zerbi could be set for a return to the Premier League, two years after being linked with the Liverpool managerial role, as Tottenham Hotspur close in on appointing a new head coach.

The Italian has emerged as the leading candidate to take charge at Spurs, who are seeking a permanent replacement following the departure of Igor Tudor.

Spurs Target Swift Appointment

Tudor’s brief spell in charge lasted just 44 days, during which he oversaw seven matches, losing five and collecting only a single point in the Premier League. That solitary point came in a draw at Anfield — a result that marked a low moment in Arne Slot’s campaign with Liverpool.

Tottenham are now keen to act quickly in securing a new manager. Reports indicate the club aims to have an appointment finalised within the next 72 hours, ahead of their upcoming fixture against Sunderland on 12 April.

De Zerbi is understood to be at the top of the club’s shortlist, although he has previously been hesitant about taking the role mid-season, preferring a move in the summer.

Liverpool Interest and Lawrenson’s Warning

The 44-year-old was previously linked with the Liverpool job in 2024, following Jürgen Klopp’s departure, after impressing during his tenure at Brighton & Hove Albion.

However, former Liverpool defender Mark Lawrenson publicly advised the club against pursuing De Zerbi, criticising his conduct at the time.

“I thought Roberto De Zerbi was a bit naughty, saying he wanted more players,” Lawrenson said. “Brighton gave him his opportunity, and he has done very well.

“But once you start asking for more players and there is talk of interest from other clubs, I don’t think Liverpool would go anywhere near him. He is a good manager, but perhaps getting carried away.”

Lawrenson also questioned De Zerbi’s handling of his final season at Brighton, suggesting the Italian struggled to cope with increased fixture demands and attributed shortcomings to squad limitations.

Different Direction for Liverpool

Liverpool ultimately opted against appointing De Zerbi, instead turning to Slot, while the Italian chose to leave Brighton and take up a role with Marseille.

Following his departure from the French club earlier this year, De Zerbi is now available — and Tottenham may be prepared to overlook past concerns in their bid to stabilise their season.

Decision Looms for Spurs

With Tottenham currently battling near the foot of the table, the urgency to appoint a new manager is growing.

While De Zerbi’s tactical acumen is widely respected, questions remain regarding his temperament and suitability for a high-pressure role.

Spurs must now decide whether to proceed with the appointment, as they look to steer the club away from relegation danger and restore stability ahead of the final stretch of the season.
