Kieran McKenna has revealed that he intends to step away from management temporarily and spend more time with his family after making the unexpected decision to resign as Ipswich Town manager following the club’s return to the Premier League.

The former Manchester United assistant manager leaves Portman Road after four and a half years in charge, having overseen one of the most impressive transformation stories in English football.

McKenna guided Ipswich from League One back to the Premier League through successive promotions and, after a disappointing 19th-place finish during the 2024–25 campaign, led the club to another promotion on the final day of the Championship season in May.

Despite earning another opportunity to compete in the top flight, the 40-year-old surprised supporters by confirming his departure on Wednesday.

In a statement released by the club, McKenna explained the reasoning behind his decision.

“It is with a mixture of gratitude, pride, sadness and contentment that I have decided to step down from the honour of managing this historic football club.

“When you have the connection that we have built at this club there is never a good time to say goodbye.

“However, having achieved a second promotion to the Premier League last season, with another memorable final day in our stadium, and after reflection over the last couple of weeks, I feel this is the right time for me to step aside.

“I do so with great pride at the incredible progress we have made and with huge hope and optimism for the future of the club.”

Family Break Planned as Future Remains Open

McKenna indicated that his immediate focus will move away from football following an intense period in management.

After years of sustained pressure and progression at Ipswich, he intends to take time to recharge and spend time with those closest to him.

“After giving so much to the role over the previous five seasons, I now look forward to taking a break from management and dedicating some time to my family, who have been with me every step of my career so far.”

While McKenna’s intention is to step away from the game temporarily, his long-term future is already likely to attract considerable interest.

Demand Expected for One of English Football’s Rising Managers

Even while under contract at Ipswich, McKenna regularly emerged as a candidate for high-profile managerial vacancies.

The highly regarded coach retains connections with Manchester United and former club Tottenham Hotspur, while his record of achieving three promotions in four years has significantly enhanced his reputation.

As managerial changes inevitably arrive across English football, McKenna’s availability could quickly become a major talking point.

Ipswich Town chairman Mark Ashton admitted disappointment at seeing the partnership come to an end.

“Like so many, I am of course gutted that our journey together has come to an end, but I understand and respect the decision he has made after five incredibly intense years.”

McKenna departs having restored belief and momentum at Portman Road, leaving behind a legacy that supporters will remember as one of the club’s most successful modern periods.
