Liam Rosenior praises Brazilian striker as “world class” after stunning performance boosts Chelsea’s Champions League hopes

Chelsea manager Liam Rosenior hailed João Pedro as “world class” after the Brazilian striker produced a sensational hat-trick to inspire a commanding 4–1 victory over Aston Villa on Wednesday night.

The forward’s first Premier League hat-trick helped lift Chelsea into fifth place in the table, leaving them just three points behind fourth-placed Aston Villa in the race to secure qualification for next season’s UEFA Champions League.

Cole Palmer also found the net in an impressive comeback performance from the Blues, who recovered strongly after Douglas Luiz had given Villa an early lead. The victory ended Chelsea’s three-match winless run in the Premier League.

João Pedro, who has now scored 14 league goals this season, delivered a clinical display that drew high praise from Rosenior after the match.

“He’s a top player. I think he’s growing in confidence. His goal with the left foot is world class. The finish is magnificent,” Rosenior said.

“But actually, I’m really delighted with his two tap-ins as well. He was in the right place at the right time.

“We’ve worked hard with him on that aspect of his game, and he’s rewarded that work with a hat-trick. It’s really difficult to single someone out, but I thought it was an an outstanding team performance.”

The result marked Chelsea’s most impressive display since Rosenior took charge two months ago. With both Manchester United and Liverpool suffering defeats during the midweek fixtures, the Blues have strengthened their push for a place in the Champions League.

However, Rosenior warned his players against complacency as they prepare for a demanding run of fixtures.

“It’s only significant if we back it up. We have to be consistent,” he said.

“We’ve got a massive FA Cup game coming up, then a huge game in Paris in the Champions League, and after that another big match against Newcastle.

“We just need to keep backing it up and not focus too much on the significance of the games. We simply have to perform, and if we perform at that level, we’ll be in a very good position.”

Aston Villa had initially made the perfect start when Luiz found the net inside the opening three minutes, raising hopes of a crucial result that could strengthen their own Champions League ambitions.

Instead, the evening turned into a frustrating one for Unai Emery’s side, who have now won just one of their last six Premier League matches.

“We are in a bad moment. Why? Maybe we have lost our structure,” Emery admitted.

“Our structure was very strong when we were consistent across different competitions. The objective we have ahead of us remains achievable and we still have time to recover.

“We must accept the difficult moment we are in and try to find solutions. That is my concern.

“Now is the moment we must stay together and work harder than we did before.”
