Morgan Gibbs-White has thanked supporters for their messages after revealing the extent of a head injury sustained during Nottingham Forest’s 3-1 victory over Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.
Gibbs-White shares injury update after Forest’s win at Chelsea amid Europa League concern
The midfielder posted an image on social media showing stitches across his forehead, underlining the severity of the cut, and admitted the support he received had been overwhelming.
“Thanks for the messages of support, what a win,” he wrote, also praising team-mate Taiwo Awoniyi for his performance.
The injury leaves Gibbs-White a doubt for Thursday’s Europa League semi-final second leg against Aston Villa, a crucial fixture as Forest aim to protect their aggregate advantage.
Forest strengthened their domestic position with an impressive win in west London, moving six points clear of the relegation zone in the Premier League and extending their unbeaten run to 10 matches in all competitions.
Awoniyi proved decisive, scoring twice either side of a penalty from Igor Jesus to secure all three points.
Gibbs-White was introduced from the bench but lasted only 20 minutes before being forced off following a clash that resulted in a deep head wound.
Manager Vítor Pereira expressed cautious optimism over the player’s condition, while acknowledging the seriousness of the injury.
“I’m waiting,” Pereira said. “Gibbs-White has a deep cut, but he is a fighter with a strong mentality. I hope our medical staff can work to get him ready for the match against Villa. We will see.
“I told him he doesn’t need to head the ball to play. He is speaking normally and remembers everything — it is just the pain we need to monitor.”
Forest had already been forced into an earlier change after Zach Abbott was withdrawn following a concussion, also caused by a collision of heads. Pereira later confirmed the defender was recovering well after speaking with him in the dressing room.
The Portuguese coach had rotated heavily for the fixture, making eight changes to his starting line-up as he balanced domestic priorities with European ambitions. Several key players, including Gibbs-White, began the match on the bench with one eye on Thursday’s decisive encounter.
“I know my players very well,” Pereira added. “I work with them every day. My aim was to manage the energy within the squad, especially with injuries in mind.
“I gave some players 45 minutes because that allows recovery time ahead of the Villa match. I can change players, but I cannot change the spirit of this team.”
Despite his satisfaction with the result, Pereira admitted the injury to Gibbs-White was the only negative on an otherwise successful evening.
“The only thing that makes me unhappy is Morgan’s injury,” he said. “But once again, the players showed their spirit, quality and organisation. I am very pleased for them and for the supporters.”
Forest will now assess Gibbs-White’s fitness ahead of their European clash, with hopes he can recover in time for what could be a defining match in their season.
