Ghana have dismissed head coach Otto Addo just 72 days before the start of the 2026 World Cup, following a disappointing run of results in the build-up to the tournament.

The decision comes after the Black Stars suffered four consecutive defeats, including heavy losses to Austria and Germany — beaten 5–1 and 2–1 respectively in the past week.

GFA Confirms Immediate Departure

The Ghana Football Association confirmed the decision in an official statement, announcing that the organisation had “parted ways” with Addo with immediate effect.

“The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has parted ways with Head Coach of the senior men’s national team (Black Stars), Otto Addo, effective immediately,” the statement read.

“The Association wishes to thank Otto Addo sincerely for his contribution to the team and wishes him the best in his future endeavours.

“The Ghana Football Association will communicate the new technical direction of the Black Stars in due course.”

World Cup Preparations Disrupted

Ghana’s preparations for the World Cup have been further undermined by their failure to qualify for the Africa Cup of Nations under Addo’s leadership, raising concerns about the team’s readiness for the global tournament.

They have been drawn in the same group as England and will face Thomas Tuchel’s side in their second group match on 23 June in Massachusetts.

The Black Stars are also scheduled to play Panama in Toronto on 17 June, before taking on Croatia in Philadelphia on 27 June.

Tournament Overview

The 2026 World Cup will be jointly hosted by Canada, Mexico and the United States, running from 11 June to 19 July.

Addo’s Tenure

Addo, who earned 15 international caps for Ghana during his playing career, returned for a second spell as head coach in March 2024 after leaving his role at Borussia Dortmund, where he had been working as a talent coach.

The 50-year-old previously led the national team on an interim basis in 2022, including at the World Cup in Qatar. Ghana secured a victory over South Korea during that tournament but were ultimately eliminated in the group stage.

The Ghana Football Association will now look to appoint a successor quickly as the team seeks to regroup and improve ahead of this summer’s competition.
