The incident occurred on Thursday morning at a level crossing in Nußdorf am Haunsberg, where emergency services were called at approximately 08:20 local time. Austrian national broadcaster ORF reported that Manninger was fatally injured, although police did not initially confirm his identity.
According to police, a car was struck and dragged by a train while crossing the tracks. The driver, who was alone in the vehicle, was freed by first responders and received immediate medical attention at the scene.
“Upon arrival, emergency responders found that the driver, a 48-year-old man from Salzburg, was undergoing CPR,” a police statement read. “Despite resuscitation efforts, including the use of a defibrillator, he succumbed to his injuries.”
The train driver was unharmed.
Manninger, who enjoyed a distinguished career across Europe, represented clubs including Juventus and Red Bull Salzburg. He was part of Arsenal’s Premier League and FA Cup-winning side in 1998 and earned 33 caps for Austria.
Salzburg paid tribute on social media, stating: “We mourn our former goalkeeper Alexander Manninger, who tragically lost his life in a traffic accident. Our thoughts are with his family and friends. Rest in peace, Alexander.”
Austrian Football Association sporting director Peter Schöttel also honoured Manninger’s legacy.
“Alexander Manninger was a great ambassador for Austrian football both on and off the pitch,” he said. “His professionalism, calmness and reliability made him an important part of his teams and the national side. His achievements are worthy of the highest respect and will be remembered.”
