Barcelona midfielder Fermín López has spoken out for the first time about the speculation surrounding his relationship with teammate Gavi, as well as transfer rumours linking him with a move to Chelsea.

In recent weeks, reports suggested a possible rift between the two midfielders, who have been close since childhood.

“Gavi has been my friend since I was 12. I’ve known him since my time at Betis, and since I joined La Masia, he has been like a brother to me. We’ve shared so much together,” Fermín told Mundo Deportivo.

“People will always speculate, that won’t change, but he is still my friend. We have a good relationship, as always, and I have nothing more to add on that.”

Commitment to Barcelona

López also addressed reports linking him with Chelsea, who were said to have set a 48-hour deadline for a decision.

“Well, my priority has always been to stay at Barça. I joined when I was 12 and it has always been my dream to reach the first team,” he explained. “It’s flattering when other clubs show interest, but the truth is, I always wanted to remain at Barça and succeed here.”

Despite the speculation, the 22-year-old stressed that he never doubted his decision.

“There has been a lot of talk, but I insist: my priority has always been Barça, and I never doubted that I wanted to stay. I’ve always felt that this is where I want to be, to try to succeed and to help the club.”

Influence of Flick and Senior Teammates

The midfielder also credited new manager Hansi Flick and senior players for playing a key role in his decision.

“It was very important, because I’ve always fought to play here. My intention is to stay at Barça. In football, you never know what can happen, as some things are beyond your control, but my priority has always been to remain here,” he said.

López revealed that Marc-André ter Stegen, Ronald Araújo and Pedri were among those who supported him. “Quite a few spoke to me, but for example, Ter Stegen, Ronald [Araújo] and Pedri — several players in truth.”

Focus on the Future

Barcelona have placed a high value on López, reportedly only willing to consider offers of around €90 million. For the youngster, this was a major show of faith.

“It’s important when the club sees you as a key player for the project and the future. It’s something to be grateful for,” he said.

With his contract extended until 2029, López hopes to enjoy a long career at Camp Nou. “You never know what the future holds, as some things are beyond your control. But yes, I see myself fulfilling my contract and hopefully spending many years at Barça.”

López insisted he is not daunted by the increased competition for places following the arrivals of Dani Olmo and Marcus Rashford.

“At Barça, there will always be great players and new signings. There will always be competition, but I believe in my ability. I will try to help the team whenever the coach needs me and I’ll continue working with humility, as always.”

Asked about his preferred role, he replied: “I’ve always said I’ll play wherever the coach asks me to, but I prefer to play as an attacking midfielder, in an advanced central position.”

High Ambitions

Reflecting on last season’s treble triumph, López set ambitious targets for the year ahead.

“Last season we won many trophies, but the Champions League left us with a thorn in our side,” he admitted. “This season, we are going for everything, with the same mentality, the same humility and, above all, hard work.”
