Danny Röhl Frustrated After Rangers Concede Two ‘Soft’ Goals in Ferencváros Defeat

A dejected Danny Röhl expressed deep frustration after Rangers conceded what he described as two “easy” goals during their 2–1 Europa League defeat to Ferencváros in Budapest.

Rangers striker Bojan Miovski produced an acrobatic finish in the 27th minute to give the visitors the lead. However, Bence Otvos levelled for Robbie Keane’s side in the fifth minute of added time at the end of the first half, capitalising on a lapse in concentration from the Ibrox side.

The Hungarians completed the turnaround in the 73rd minute when Barnabás Varga was allowed to head home from close range with minimal resistance from the Rangers defence. The result leaves the Light Blues with just one point from a possible 18 in the league phase — with four of those matches overseen by Röhl after he succeeded Russell Martin in October.

Röhl, who has won five of his seven domestic fixtures since taking charge, told Rangers TV that the level of defending was simply not good enough.

“We are disappointed and angry at ourselves,” said the German coach, who confirmed that Miovski will be assessed after the North Macedonia international was forced off with a knock.

“We gifted them two easy goals.

“We were good in the first half, a clean sheet, we scored a good goal. I think the plan was clear.

“But then, 20 seconds before half-time, we concede the first goal. And the second goal too — it’s too easy, really too easy.

“To take something at this level, you need clean sheets.

“This is now the second time. Against Braga we were 1–0 up and gave away a gift; today as well. At this level, you do not deserve to win these games, and that makes me really disappointed.

“Go in at half-time with a clean sheet — there were 20 seconds to go. Defend well and nothing happens. Then we come out and they must attack more, the game opens up, and we have transition moments.

“But even in the second half at 1–1, we had so many transition moments where we weren’t clinical enough. We lost the ball too quickly. This is about game management — being clinical in these games if you want to take something.”
