Chelsea have confirmed that young forward Jesse Derry is “conscious” and “talking” after being taken to hospital following a serious clash of heads during their 3-1 defeat to Nottingham Forest at Stamford Bridge.
Chelsea provide positive Jesse Derry update after teenager hospitalised with head injury
The 18-year-old was making his first Premier League start for the Blues when the incident occurred just before half-time, as he collided in the air with Forest defender Zach Abbott.
Derry received lengthy on-pitch treatment before being stretchered off, with Chelsea later confirming via their official channels that he had been taken to hospital as a precaution.
In a statement, the club said:
“Jesse Derry has been taken to hospital as a precaution following his first-half substitution during today’s Premier League match against Nottingham Forest.
“Jesse is conscious, talking and undergoing precautionary checks. We wish him a speedy recovery and thank the medical staff for their swift response.”
Both Derry and Abbott were withdrawn before the break due to the collision, with further concern later in the match after additional head injuries disrupted proceedings.
Morgan Gibbs-White, who had come on at half-time, was later bandaged following a clash with Chelsea goalkeeper Robert Sánchez, who was also substituted, with both players able to walk off despite requiring treatment for cuts.
Despite the incidents, Nottingham Forest secured a 3-1 victory to move closer to Premier League safety. Taiwo Awoniyi scored twice, including an early opener and a second-half strike, while Igor Thiago added a penalty to put Forest firmly in control.
Chelsea briefly responded through a late consolation from João Pedro, but the result leaves the London club with further frustration in a difficult run of form.
