Brighton & Hove Albion produced a remarkable second-half comeback to defeat Women’s Super League leaders Manchester City 3–2 at Broadfield Stadium on Saturday, dealing a significant blow to the title contenders.
Brighton Stun WSL Leaders Manchester City with Dramatic Comeback Victory
City appeared firmly in control early on, taking the lead in just the fifth minute as they sought to maintain their charge towards the WSL crown. However, Brighton responded in emphatic fashion, overturning the deficit with a spirited display.
Brighton Fight Back in Style
A brace from Madison Haley, combined with a goal from Kiko Seike, saw Brighton surge into a 3–1 lead, leaving the league leaders stunned.
Khadija Shaw pulled one back for Manchester City in the 86th minute to set up a tense finale, but Brighton held firm to secure a memorable victory in front of their home supporters.
Title Race Intensifies
The defeat leaves City’s title ambitions hanging in the balance. They may now need to secure maximum points from their final two league fixtures to guarantee the championship, unless Arsenal falter in their remaining matches in hand.
Brighton, meanwhile, consolidate their position in sixth place, continuing what has been an impressive campaign.
City captain Alex Greenwood admitted the result fell short of expectations.
“This wasn’t part of the plan,” she told Sky Sports. “We knew Brighton were a strong side and it was always going to be a difficult game.
“In the first half we created the better chances and probably should have been further ahead. Letting them back into the game just before half-time was disappointing, and in the second half we missed key details which ultimately cost us.”
She added: “It’s still in our hands, so we need to stay positive and focus on the next matches. It’s about mentality now — treating the final games like cup finals and ensuring we deliver.”
Pressure Builds Ahead of Final Fixtures
Manchester City are aiming to win their first WSL title since 2016 under head coach Andrée Jeglertz. They currently hold a nine-point lead over second-placed Chelsea, although Arsenal, who trail by 11 points, have three games in hand and could close the gap significantly.
City will host Liverpool in their penultimate fixture on 3 May before travelling to face West Ham United on the final day of the season on 16 May.
Honest Assessment from Brighton Camp
Despite the victory, Brighton forward Fran Kirby offered a candid evaluation of her side’s performance, particularly their struggles in the opening half.
“We didn’t make it easy for ourselves. In the first half, if I’m being honest, we were awful,” she said. “We were fortunate not to be three or four goals down at one stage.
“However, we showed belief, and the second half was a strong performance from everyone. We’re pleased to have kept the title race alive a little longer.”
Kirby also acknowledged her own emotions during the match, adding: “I just want to help the team as much as possible. Sometimes that passion shows, but today is a big step forward for us and another positive moment in our season.”
Brighton Continue Impressive Campaign
Brighton’s victory adds to what has already been a successful season. The club have also reached the Adobe Women’s FA Cup semi-finals, having secured a notable win over Arsenal in the quarter-finals.
Their latest performance further underlines their growing competitiveness in the WSL, as they continue to challenge some of the league’s strongest sides.
