Boston United have confirmed the dismissal of manager Graham Coughlan, making him the latest head coach to lose his job in the National League this season.
Boston United Confirm Sacking of National League Manager Graham Coughlan
The Irishman departs after 14 months in charge at the Jakemans Community Stadium, with the Pilgrims currently sitting 16th in the table and only three points above the relegation zone.
Coughlan’s final match in charge was Saturday’s goalless draw away to fellow strugglers Braintree Town, a result that did little to ease pressure amid a poor run of form. Boston have managed just one win from their last 11 league matches, a sequence that includes November’s 2–1 home defeat to Carlisle United.
In an official statement, the club announced the decision to part ways with the 51-year-old.
“Boston United have parted company with first-team manager Graham Coughlan,” the statement read. “The decision follows Saturday’s 0–0 draw at Braintree Town, with the Pilgrims currently four places and three points clear of the relegation positions ahead of next Saturday’s fixture at FC Halifax Town.”
Despite recent struggles, the club acknowledged Coughlan’s positive contribution during his tenure. Appointed in November 2024 as the successor to Ian Culverhouse, he successfully guided Boston to National League safety during the 2024/25 campaign.
“Graham will be fondly remembered for leading the Pilgrims to safety last season,” the statement added. “There will be no further comment at this stage as the club works to put a new management team in place.”
Carlisle United have enjoyed notable success against Boston under Coughlan this season, defeating the Pilgrims twice. That included a 5–2 victory at Brunton Park in October during the FA Cup fourth-round qualifying, followed by a dramatic 2–1 league win at Boston in November, when Harvey Macadam struck a last-gasp winner.
Boston are scheduled to return to Brunton Park for a league fixture on 21 March.
Coughlan becomes the tenth managerial casualty in the National League during the 2025/26 season, underlining the growing pressure on clubs battling to avoid relegation.
