Tensions have escalated ahead of the World Cup play-off between Bosnia and Herzegovina and Italy, following allegations that a soldier was caught filming Bosnia’s training session.

The two nations are set to meet this evening at Bilino Polje Stadium in Zenica, with a place at this summer’s tournament at stake. Both sides progressed to the play-off final after overcoming Northern Ireland and Wales respectively.

Allegations of Training Ground Surveillance

According to reports, a member of the European Union Force (EUFOR) was seen recording Bosnia and Herzegovina’s training session, during which players were receiving tactical instructions from the coaching staff.

The individual is believed to have filmed for approximately 15 minutes before being confronted by security personnel and asked to stop.

Further claims suggest the soldier involved may be Italian, intensifying concerns and prompting questions regarding the motive behind the incident.

FA Lodges Complaint

The Football Association of Bosnia and Herzegovina has since lodged an ოფიციcial complaint over the matter.

In a statement reported by local media, concerns were raised about the timing and intent of the recording.

“After a brief discussion, the recording was stopped, but questions remain as to who instructed the EUFOR member and for what purpose, particularly during an official training session,” the statement indicated.

The report also suggested that such actions may reflect the meticulous approach of Italy’s coaching staff, led by Gennaro Gattuso, in preparing for high-stakes fixtures.

High Stakes for Both Nations

Italy, four-time World Cup winners, enter the match as favourites but are under pressure to secure qualification after missing the previous three tournaments.

Despite this, Bosnia and Herzegovina represent a formidable challenge. Their recent victory over Wales on penalties demonstrated their resilience and determination.

Veteran striker Edin Džeko is expected to play a key role, bringing experience and leadership to the side.

Džeko Responds to Italy Reactions

Following Bosnia’s win over Wales, several Italy players were reportedly seen celebrating — a reaction that raised eyebrows.

“I don’t know why Italy preferred not to play in Wales; we went there without fear and won,” Džeko said.

“Italy are an incredible national team, but after missing recent World Cups, they have a lot at stake.”

The 40-year-old also revealed that Federico Dimarco had apologised for any perceived disrespect.

“Dimarco contacted me to say there was no intention to offend,” Džeko added. “I told him there is no issue from my side.

“Everyone has their own preferences — that is normal. However, in today’s world, especially with social media, such situations can easily be misunderstood.”

Focus Turns to Decisive Clash

With controversy surrounding the build-up, attention now shifts to the pitch, where both teams will look to secure their place at the World Cup.

While Italy’s pedigree makes them favourites, Bosnia’s recent form and fighting spirit ensure that the outcome remains far from certain.
